July 15 marks the return ofHigh on Lifeto the Xbox Game Pass subscription service. The game follows a teenager who stumbles upon a talking handgun during an alien invasion. From there, the two team up to take down a lineup of villainous aliens while searching for more talking weapons. What setsHigh on Lifeapartas an FPS, though, is its unique dark humor. Throughout the campaign, Kenny—the primary weapon—and his fellow talking guns constantly deliver humorous commentary as the player mows down alien enemies.

Xbox Game Pass Still Has Four More Games on the Way in July

Squanch Games’sci-fi shootercurrently has “Very Positive” reviews on Steam, which reflects its popularity among fans. While it’s unclear how longHigh on Lifewill remain on Xbox Game Pass, it will likely be available for at least a few months on the Ultimate, Standard, and PC tiers.

Although talking guns are one ofHigh on Life’s prominent features, it’s not the first IP to include them. There are several othergames with talking weaponsthat players might want to check out after playing Squanch Games' comedy FPS. Some notable examples includeSaints Row: Gat Out of Hell,Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, andTransistor. Each of these games features some form of sentient weaponry that adds unique commentary during combat, much like Kenny’s remarks inHigh on Life. Players can also addHigh on Life 2to their wishlist if they like the talking gun trope, as the sequel will likely hit the market in winter 2025.

On a side note, some players may find Kenny’s voice inHigh on Lifefamiliar; that’s because the character is voiced by Justin Roiland, best known for playing both Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith in the Adult Swim seriesRick and Morty.Roiland was later removed fromHigh on LifeDLCfollowing criminal charges that surfaced in 2023, and he won’t be featured in the upcoming sequel. Luckily, the developer has already proved that the franchise can hold its own without him, as theHigh on KnifeDLC did pretty well despite his absence.
