A few days ago, a self-proclaimed insider by the name of Detective Seeds claimed that Rockstar Games' upcoming juggernaut,Grand Theft Auto 6, would have a 60 FPS mode exclusively for the PS5 Pro. This optimization effort was apparently the result of an unannounced marketing deal between Rockstar and PlayStation. Sony, as the story goes, seemingly sent engineers to Rockstar in order to ensure that the studio could getGTA 6to run well on its high-end console. Detective Seeds, who later claimed that he received this information from a trustworthy PlayStation engineer, also stated thatGTA 6would have multiple graphical settings on the PS5 Pro. He, however, noted that these details were subject to change.
Since it was widely assumed thatGTA 6would only be able to run at 30 FPS on all platforms, Detective Seeds' report about the game came as a surprise to many gamers.GTA 6was, after all, only going to be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S at launch, and it therefore seemed unlikely that the current-gen consoles would be able to handle such a demanding game at a high frame-rate. This skepticism may end up being justified in the end because, despite what Detective Seeds has said, the chances ofGTA 6running at 60 FPS on the PS5 Proare fairly slim.
Contrary to Recent Rumors, GTA 6 Will Probably Be 30 FPS on PS5 Pro
GTA Games Have Historically Been 30 FPS on Consoles
WhenGTA 6was originally announced in December 2023, several gamers speculated about the prospects of it being able to run at 60 FPS on current-gen consoles.Grand Theft Autogameshave, for the most part, pushed the technical boundaries of the platforms they’ve debuted on, and, as a result, they have usually failed to run at 60 FPS at launch. Due to this, and the fact that the game’s reveal trailer ran at 30 FPS, many concluded thatGTA 6would follow in the footsteps of its predecessors.
The PS5 Pro’s Announcement Sparked Hope for a 60 FPS Mode in GTA 6
After the reveal of the PS5 Pro, though, the opinions surrounding this matter started to change. Since previousGrand Theft Autogames had never launched in a console generation witha mid-gen refresh like the PS5 Probefore, the possibility ofGTA 6getting a 60 FPS mode on the console seemed somewhat plausible in the eyes of many fans. While it would be awesome if this was actually the case, some comments from the tech experts at Digital Foundry have poured cold water on the idea.
Although It May Provide Enhancements in Some Ways, Digital Foundry Believes that the PS5 Pro Won’t Run GTA 6 at 60 FPS
In an interview with IGN in September 2024, Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter stated thatGTA 6would likely be capped at 30 FPSon PS5 Pro. According to Leadbetter, “Grand Theft Autogames have always run complex simulations that push the CPU hard,” andGTA 6seemingly won’t change this trend. Since the PS5 Pro and the PS5 both share the same CPU, he reasoned that “it would be extremely challenging to hit 60 FPS if the base PS5 version is targeting 30 FPS.” In Leadbetter’s eyes, the PS5 Pro would need a better CPU, not a GPU, to runGTA 6at a significantly better frame-rate.
Following the launch ofGTA 6’s second trailer in May 2025,Digital Foundry reiterated its thoughtson the 60 FPS on PS5 Pro debacle, stating that “everything points to” the game being 30 FPS on all platforms.
GTA 6probably isn’t going to run at a buttery-smooth 60 FPS on any device. However, if the game gets a dedicated patch for the PS5 Pro, it may receive some other technical improvements on the console. Digital Foundry, in fact, has stated thatGTA 6will likely have higher-quality visualson Sony’s mid-gen console compared to other systems, and that the game’s ray-tracing effects may receive the most noticeable benefits. Ultimately, although the PS5 Pro will still be the best place to playGrand Theft Auto 6at launch, the advantages the console will have over other platforms probably won’t be that significant.
