What’s Going on in Boruto TBV?

This section contains spoilers for Boruto: Two Blue Vortex.

Boruto: Two Blue Vortextakes place two years afterBoruto: Naruto Next Generations, continuing the story. At the end ofBoruto: Naruto Next Generations,Boruto becomes an outcastafter Eida’s Omnipotence alters almost everyone’s memories. The sequel starts from this point, but following a time skip: Boruto has been gone for two years, branded as Konoha’s Number 1 enemy for allegedly killing Naruto Uzumaki—something he never did.

In reality, Kawaki Uzumaki, Boruto’s adopted brother, sealed Naruto and Hinata in another dimension, but Eida’s abilities caused Boruto and Kawaki to swap places, so almost no one knows what Kawaki has done. Only a few people, all of whom seem to have Otsutsuki ancestry, haven’t been affected by Omnipotence. To make matters worse, there are nowHuman God Trees threatening Konoha.

Studio Pierrot Likely to Refrain from Filler Content in Boruto Part 2

In addition to Kyohei’s thoughts on the difficulty of adding filler content toBoruto: Two Blue Vortex, it seems thatStudio Pierrot has been changing its approach to anime production. Pierrot is known for producing long-running series without breaks, which was the standard model of anime production for decades. Major studios like Toei still produce a few series within this model, likeOne Piece. However, with this approach, once the anime gets too close to the manga, the production needs to come up with filler arcs to buy some time as the manga advances.

However, the anime industry has shifted in recent years, and most anime today are produced within a seasonal model. In the past, even anime running for two or three cours would air straight through, but now series often take a break between cours. With this approach, there’s no need to worry about catching up with the manga: if the anime is too close, they can simply pause the production until there’s enough content for a new season. Additionally, it gives the team more time to focus on delivering higher-quality animation for the next set of episodes.

Pierrot has been experimenting withthis approach inBleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, and it seems to be paying off. Producers have commented that the studio plans to focus on delivering seasonal content moving forward. Therefore,Boruto Part 2, which is already confirmed to be in production, will likely follow this model.

When Will the Boruto Anime Return?

According to theofficial website of Studio Pierrot,Boruto Part 2is in the works. However, the website doesn’t provide a release window for the series.Boruto: Naruto Next Generationsaired its last episode in March 2023, a few weeks before the manga concluded. Thus, there is stillBoruto: Naruto Next Generationscontent left to be adapted.

There are two main possibilities: either thefirst season ofBoruto Part 2will cover the remaining content from theBoruto: Naruto Next Generationsmanga, or it will begin withBoruto: Two Blue Vortex. If they choose the second option, they will either drop the remaining parts ofNext Generationsas flashbacks, or they might produce a movie covering the final chapters.
