TwitchCEO Dan Clancy was called out on social media for violating the site’s unwritten rules against self-promotion in other content creators' chats, and for spamming his requests across multiple channels simultaneously. Despite his self-promoting messages being for a charity event he was participating in, the head ofTwitchwas criticized for not understanding or following the site’s basic rules and etiquette.
Since self-promotion is not listed as a violation of Twitch’s terms of service, content creators on the Amazon-owned service usually have their own rules against self-promotion by a chat user, as it is considered disrespectful to the broadcaster and their peers. While self-promotion is notgrounds for a Twitch ban, it can often earn users a timeout from a chat channel for a set duration, which temporarily prevents them from sending messages, along with a warning from a moderator to not do it again. However, sending the same messages without permission breaks the site’s rules, which can lead to more severe punishments.
Despite his good intentions to get people to donate to charity, Twitch’s CEO was called out for breaking one of the site’s basic guidelines. As reported by Dexerto, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy, under the username DJClancy, was “shamelessly” messaging large content creators to come raid him after their streams had concluded. Clancy’s message stated that he was part of aGCX charity segmentfor St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which took place July 14-21 across multiple Twitch channels. While Clancy raised $4,000 for the cause during his weekend segment, his methods were considered disrespectful on social media. According to Zach Bussey on Twitter, a moderator handed Clancy a 10-minute timeout for self-promotion. Former Twitch staff member Marcus “djWHEAT” Graham, and GCX co-founder Cory “Gothalion” Michael condemned Clancy for his actions, with Gothalion pondering why Clancy was not proactive in his approach.
Twitch CEO Dan Clancy Called Out For Self-Promotion
On top of self-promotion being frowned upon by Twitch content creators, Clancy also admitted to sending the same messages across multiple channels, which skirts the rule against spam.According to the Twitch Safety Center, spam is considered large amounts of repetitive, unwanted messages or user reports, and can disrupt or violate the Twitch user experience. Spamming the same messages can lead to actions taken against the offending account, includinga temporary ban from streaming on Twitch.
As of this writing, no further action has been taken against Clancy’s Twitch channel. WithTwitch receiving stiff competition from Kickfor viewership, it remains to be seen how Clancy will respond to his actions.
