Now is a delicate moment forDestiny 2, as it transitions from the last weeks of The Final Shape to a whole new model and direction for the game with The Edge of Fate, which is about to be released in just over three weeks on July 15. The Edge of Fate entirely changesDestiny 2and how it’s played, based on everything revealed so far, but some staples are going to stay. One of them is the Iron Banner activity, but it stays with an asterisk attached.
Destiny 2’s Iron Banneris a loved and simultaneously hated PvP activity thanks to the many changes it went through, issues with matchmaking, FOMO loot, and some problematic game modes. Still, it’s more often than not very much worth farming thanks to good PvP loot, with the occasional breakout PvE rolls that make the population play it more consistently for a week or two. However, today marks the end of an era for Iron Banner, with the activity going away tomorrow at reset for the remainder of The Final Shape and staying gone for a few months.
This is becauseDestiny 2’s The Edge of Fateis coming in July, and Bungie announced that Iron Banner is going on hiatus until September, with Trials of Osiris starting on July 29 and coming back every weekend until Iron Banner’s return. This means that Iron Banner will be gone for around 10 weeks from now, and that’s because Bungie confirmed it will come back with the Ash and Iron update scheduled for September 9.
Today also marks the last Iron Banner day of The Final Shape era.
What to Expect From Destiny 2’s PvP in The Edge of Fate
Destiny 2’s PvP contentwill mostly revolve around Trials of Osiris when The Edge of Fate drops, but Bungie also announced a new playlist for the first week of the expansion, called Cutting Edge. This will only allow seasonal weapons, armor, and Exotics to be used, meaning that players will have to change their loadouts accordingly.
SinceDestiny 2’s Trials of Osiris overhaul, PvP has been getting better player numbers overall, and with a lot of systems changing in The Edge of Fate, it does make sense to have this mode be the main one. However, Iron Banner offers a more casual experience with the freshness of new and exclusive loot, so seeing it go away for two and a half months may be sad for a lot of fans.
At the same time, Iron Banner does have its haters, even in the Twitter post from Bungie stating that today is the last day to get Engrams and triumphs. As such, some players may be sad to see it go on hiatus, especially withDestiny 2’s Gambit being canceledfor the time being, but others may be pleased at the decision. Either way, fans will be able to meet Lord Saladin again in September, possibly alongside some Iron Banner reworks with the Ash and Iron update.
