The Last of Usseason 2 is now done and dusted, and what a rollercoaster it has been for fans of the Naughty Dog adaptation. However, since the second season’s cliffhanger ending, fans have been wondering when they can expect to see the story continue on their screens. Thankfully, HBO boss Casey Bloys has an exciting update to that very question.

Throughout its highs and many lows, season 2 ofThe Last of Ussaw Joel and Ellie’s world turned completely upside down as the pair were drawn into conflict with each other in a world even more unpredictable than the one they left behind in season one. Just like the Naughty Dog sequel that the show has been adapted from, season 2 saw a host of traumatic events unfold, like how Joel’s journey came to a sad end in episode 2 at the hands of Abby Anderson in a brutal revenge attack for the death of her father, Jerry, as well as the aftermath of this for Ellie as she tried to bury her dark emotions into a quest for blood to kill Abby and the rest of the WLF members. With the show’s second season now over, we now have a clearer idea of whenThe Last of Usseason three is aiming to be released.

The Last of Us Season 3 Release Window Confirmed

In an interview withVariety,HBO and Max content chairman/CEO Casey Bloys has finally confirmed thatThe Last of Usseason 3 is aiming to be released sometime next year in 2027.Bloys also revealed that the show’s sole showrunner, Craig Mazin, is still questioning whetherThe Last of Uswill finish up on its next season or continue into more, even though it was previously slated to run for more than four seasons.

“The series is definitely planned for 2027. Craig is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that.”

So, it seems as thoughLast of Usfans have a lot to be excited about next year whenthe series is set to return and focus on Abby’s side of the traumatic and complex narrative. Although Bloys didn’t pinpoint an exact month when viewers could expect season 3 to premiere, it’s fantastic news that it, hopefully, won’t be too much of a wait, as no one wants anotherSeverancesituation.

It is clear that, due toNeil Druckmann and Halley Gross leaving the series to focus on other projects, Mazin has a lot on his hands to work out and perfect, given that what happens next is a gigantic responsibility and critical to the show’s success, since season 2 received a mixed response. Thankfully, Bloys said that Druckmann left the team with a “good blueprint” for the continuation of the show, so that’s something to be hopeful about.

The downside to Mazin considering doing one final, long season instead of two smaller seasons is that the wait for the show’s return could be even longer because, as it stands, there is already around a 2-year wait, which isn’t ideal. However, becauseseason 2 wasn’t as strong as season 1, this could give the series enough time to work out all the kinks that showed up in season 2, allowing the show to shine brighter than ever.
