The First Descendanthas shared fresh information about the upcoming Season 3: Breakthrough update, alongside a couple of action-heavy trailers. First revealed in May,The First Descendant’s new season is scheduled to arrive on July 12, 2025, and brings a plethora of new content, ranging from a new playable character toNieR: Automatacrossover skins.

Since rolling out in July 2024,The First Descendanthas received two major seasonal updates, the latest of which became available in December last year. However, neither of them were able to propel the looter shooter title back to the levels of popularity experienced at launch, when it crossed 264K concurrent players on Steam. In the past few months,The First Descendant’s Steam engagement has steadily dipped, and the number of concurrent users consistently hovers under 10K players now. Fortunately, the Nexon-developed game’s third season is right around the corner and holds promise for a possible turnaround.

At the Descendant Fest 2025, a livestream event marking the game’s one-year anniversary, Nexon devs revealed new insights about the variousadditional content coming toThe First Descendantin Season 3. During the stream, Axion Plains was confirmed to be the “main stage” for the upcoming season, presenting players with the opportunity to partake in big battles and in discovering new dungeons, among other things. The Wall Crasher, a new boss encountered in the Colossus Field Raid activity, was revealed to be a slow but powerful enemy, who relies on inflicting damage through shockwaves, ranged attacks, and area-of-effect attacks. Moreover, they unveiled a new trailer that focused on forthcoming features, such as the Hover Bike and the new playable character known as Nell. Those interested in checking out the content refresh early can download and play the demo, starting on July 24.

The First Descendant Shows Off Features Coming in Season 3: Breakthrough

In addition, there was anaction-packed trailerforThe First Descendant’sNieR: Automatacollaboration, which comes out on the same day as Season 3, giving fans a new look at the 2B and A2 skins coming to the live-service game. As told by the devs, the respective likenesses of these characters as well as certain exclusive cosmetics are scheduled to land in the online shooter. Interestingly, it is also set to be the latest entry on the list ofNieR-themed crossovers that have been shipped in recent months.

The First Descendantteam will hope that Season 3 can give a strong boost to the game’s engagement, which has dwindled significantly over time. As a matter of fact, the numbers on Steam are now less than 10% of what they used to be around the time of launch. While the corresponding data for consoles isn’t publicly available, it seems reasonable to expect the engagement to have gone down there as well, especially afterThe First Descendantrecently pulled the plug on its last-gen console portsin June.
