Somewhat unexpectedly, players can now claim old items from past seasons using theDestiny 2Season Pass Wayback Machine, but this helpful browser extension says more about a big Bungie issue than it might seem. The way it works is simple: fans returning to the game for The Edge of Fate can install an extension for Firefox or Chrome, and then pull any item from ornaments to Ascendent Shards they may have missed from their Bungie account. Anyone who’s played the game for a while has likely missed something from a past season, so the good news is, if it was unlocked at the time, it can still be claimed.

This might sound familiar to many veteran players, as it is something that Bungie used to let players do without the need for browser extensions. However, at some point, it became quite restricted, with only the previous season still available to players. The reasoning behind Bungie removing this feature from its website had always seemed unclear, but as with many retired features ofDestiny 2, it went into the vault, seemingly never to return. The fact that the community has put together a solution to this problem is both very helpful to older players and speaks to a long-running Bungie trend that many players wish they could see the back of.

The Destiny 2 Season Pass Wayback Machine Exposes the Destiny Content Vault for What It Is

The reason that the Season Pass Wayback Machine is so popular is because it offers a utility value that Bungie itself could, but chose not to. This was once a feature that any player could access, before it was restricted, so it raises the question of why Bungie had to remove it in the first place.Destiny 2has a long history of being significantly aided by third-party applications, such asDestiny Item Manager, D2 Foundry, and D2 Armor Picker to name a few. The accessible API has provided fertile soil for incredibly useful applications, some of which have been so integral that Bungie implemented their features directly intoDestiny 2.

Bungie Taketh Away, the Community Provideth

This is not the first or last time that an integral feature will be implemented by the community. Oftentimes, these features come about because of a limit that Bungie places onDestiny, citing storage, engine limitations, or something similar. The problem, though, is that it can be hard to know what to believe anymore.Destiny 2’s bugs are infamous, and there have been times when the game was unplayable, so it’s easy to see that certain features might need to be cut. But when someone else can turn those features back on, and they don’t even work for Bungie, it casts doubt on the developer’s assertions.

It is also a necessary thing given that a lot of these limitations are enforced not for stability reasons, but arbitrarily. Deepsight Harmonizers are a great example of an item integral toDestiny 2’s weapon crafting, limited in scope by Bungie. It used to be that only one could be in a player’s inventory, until the limit was raised slightly. These are one of the items that the Season Pass Wayback Machine is most useful for, but it shouldn’t really need to be the case - storing any number of these is not likely to break crafting more than it already is.

WithDestiny 2so prone to bugs, it can be easy for Bungie’s limitations to be passed off as necessary, but this latest community-built extension shows that the real reason may be quite different. IfDestiny 2is going to clear up its image problem, Bungie needs to be ready to make clear overtures to a community that has had to clean up after its messes, or risk losing the players who have stuck by for so long.
