SomeNintendo Switch 2users have noticed that their Joy-Cons' rumble feature is turning itself off. Haptic feedback may not be what convinces many people to buy a console, but it was a central part of the marketing for the original Switch, and Nintendo has heavily touted the new-and-improved Joy-Cons' functionality. However, theNintendo Switch 2may stop some gamers from using the feature for too long.

Before Nintendo released its latest system, it confirmed thatthe Switch 2’s HD Rumble would be quieter but more powerfulthan that of its predecessor. Many found that to be good news, as some users found the haptic feedback to be too noisy and disruptive at times. Now, though, it seems like the protections meant to avoid this issue and similar problems may be a little too proactive in some cases.

Redditor Wonderful_Guava1533 posted a screenshot showing an alert that their Switch 2 had automatically switched off Joy-Con rumble “due to prolonged use” while playingTears of the Kingdom. According to the post, the message started appearing after roughly an hour and a half of playtime in handheld mode, but now the rumble shuts off after 20 minutes. While it may not be the most disruptive Joy-Con-related issue, asthe Switch 2 still suffers from stick drift, several other users in the comments said they had experienced the same thing across different games. Many noticed it while playingSplit Fiction, while others encountered it while playingThe Wind Wakerthrough the console’s Nintendo Switch Online service.

Some Switch 2 Users Report Joy-Con Rumble Is Turning Itself Off

While Nintendo has not spoken out about the issue, some users think they know what’s causing it. A couple of other Redditors suggested it could be a thermal safeguard to stop the Joy-Cons from overheating when the vibrations get too intense. Others said it could be a measure to prevent hand-arm vibration syndrome, which leads to numbness after prolonged vibrations. One user commented that they had experienced this on the original Switch, so whileit’s possible to use Switch 1 Joy-Cons on the Switch 2, it may be best to stick to the newer ones with this built-in safety feature.

While the auto-shutoff function may be an intentional design choice, the frequency some users report seeing it may mean it’s not working as intended. It’s not the only potential hardware problem with the new console, either. Nintendo is currentlylooking into reports of swelling Switch 2 batteries, so gamers may want to keep an eye out for these issues.
