An unfortunateNintendo Switch 2owner has issued a warning to the community that a permanent ban from Nintendo is irrevocable and cannot be lifted. As with the Switch 1, Nintendo manages allSwitch 2online services, and can ban users from accessing them over illegal activity or other violations of the company’s terms of service.
A little less than a month has passed since the Nintendo Switch 2 officially launched, and fans have begun to come to grips with the hardware and its games. There’s no denying that the platform is a massive hit:Switch 2 sales are breaking recordsand many fans are increasingly excited about the platform exclusives set to come down the pipeline.
Unfortunately, the Switch 2 isn’t completely free of complaints, some of them serious. One user who goes Funaoe24 on Reddit warned community members not to risk getting their consoles permanently banned by Nintendo, not even for things like silly names. They reported that their sister, who uses the console as well, changed her username to “Twink Link,” combining a reference to LGBT+ slang with the name ofthe iconicLegend of Zeldahero. The apparent naming infraction resulted in a permanent and irrevocable “System Ban” from Nintendo, restricting the console itself from accessing any Nintendo services at all. After contacting support, Funaoe24 reported that the only recourse recommended by Nintendo was to attempt to return the console to the store and have it replaced.
Nintendo Permabans A Switch 2 Console Over Name Change
Users thanked Funaoe24 for the warning, with many commenters expressing their sympathy, as Funaoe24 had effectively lost a beloved part of the console, namely theSwitch 2 online features, through no fault of their own. A few jokingly declared that the ban was “worth it” for the funny name used by Funaoe24’s sister. They said that though the banned name was a slang term, the name itself was not vulgar or offensive in any way, suggesting that Nintendo was being too strict with terms associated with the LGBT+ community.
Other users expressed some skepticism over Funaoe24’s account, since Nintendo seemingly issued an extreme system ban for a single user using words that are not on the built-in Switch 2 automated ban list. They suggested, without direct evidence, that Funaoe24 or someone using their console might have been attempting to use a MIG Flash device or other third-party hardware in a way that Nintendo considers a terms of service violation.Nintendo has banned Switch 2 consolesusing MIG Flash devices and similar hardware without warning.
Whatever the truth of the matter, the incident shows that Nintendo can and does act quickly and without apparent leniency in punishing users it sees as violating the rules. Though many users consider such reactions overkill or even unfair, those who want to keep access to their Switch 2 services would do well to act with care, even in matters as mundane as username selection.
