Super Mario 3D Worldhas just received a new update more than 11 years after the action platformer game’s initial launch. Players shouldn’t expect to see any new content added toSuper Mario 3D World, but the latest patch does bring the game into the modern age, providing stability on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Super Mario 3D Worldreleasedall theway back in November 2013, when the game was first launched on the Wii U. An updated version, titledSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, is a much more recent offering, bringing the game to the Nintendo Switch in February 2021.
With therelease of the Nintendo Switch 2on June 5, a number of games from the original Switch have been receiving updates to make them run better on Nintendo’s newest hardware. The latest patch notes forSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Furyare very brief, and they state that this latest update, version 1.2.1, does just that, fixing some behaviors of the Nintendo Switch 2 when players are using it to access the game. However, the patch notes also come with a warning to players, as the new update only supports local user compatibility with versions 1.1.0 and 1.2.0, so any players who have somehow avoided all previous updates since launch and are still running version 1.0.0 should proceed with caution.
Nintendo’s Japanese website includes acompatibility indexthat was launched prior to the Switch 2’s release in order to inform players about any games from the original Switch that may give them problems on the Switch 2. Hundreds of different titles are listed, and for the most part, there should be very few major issues for players trying to access their older games on the new hybrid console. Still, there are exceptions caused by the Switch 2’s more powerful hardware and unique features, like agame-breakingSuper Smash Bros. Ultimatebugthat has resulted in matches ending immediately when a Mii Fighter is used in a match between players using a combination of Switch and Switch 2 consoles. Nintendo had promised a fix for this bug in early June, but it is still showing as active on the compatibility index website.
Notes on the repairs in the newest update are vague, but they could be related to a similar issue. The Bowser’s Fury campaign seesMario get help from Bowser Jr.to save his father from his transformation into Fury Bowser. Bowser Jr. can be directly controlled through a two-player version of this campaign, and the newest notes may indicate that this feature should now run more smoothly for Switch 2 players.
