Summary
Fans have been waiting a long time for the third entry in Sony’s animatedSpider-Versetrilogy,Spider-Man:Beyond the Spider-Verse. Unfortunately, they’re going to have to wait a bit longer than expected.
Up untilSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Versewas released in December 2018, general audiences weren’t expecting very much from the Sony Pictures Animation film. After all, things had fallen apart withAndrew Garfield’sAmazing Spider-ManfranchiseandVenom, which was released a few months before the firstSpider-Versemovie, didn’t exactly assuage fears that Sony was in over their heads with the Spider-Man film rights. At that point in time, Sony Pictures Animation wasn’t seen as being in the same league as Pixar and DreamWorks, either. It’s easy to forget following theSpider-Versefilms,The Mitchells vs. the Machines, andKPop Demon Hunters, but Sony Pictures Animation was then best known for theOpen SeasonandHotel Transylvaniafranchises. Successful movies, sure, but critical darlings they were not. Then,Into the Spider-Versecame out, delighted audiences and critics, made a whole bunch of money, and kickstarted a newSpider-Mantrilogy centered around Miles Morales.Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Versecame in 2023, andSpider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Versewas supposed to follow in 2024, but, um, that didn’t happen.
Cover your eyes, Spidey fans.Yet again,Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’s release datehas been pushed back from June 25, 2025 to June 20, 2025.It’s not exactly a disastrous delay, but it merely adds insult to injury at this point. You see,Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Versehas had a bit of a tumultuous time with production, considering its release date has been pushed back several times.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’s Release Date Has Been Pushed Back Again
Is Sony Pictures Merely Torturing The Fandom?
First,Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Versewas supposed to release on July 01, 2025, about a year afterSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s 2023 debut. The 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike caused production delays, but the film was still initially rumored to hit theaters at some point in 2024. Then, it was assumed that Sony was holding an “unspecified Marvel film” release date of Jun 20, 2025 for the film, but that mysterious spot was eventually wiped from Sony’s calendar. After this, all bets were off as Sony andSpider-Verseproducing duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller wereradio silent about the film’s release.
Finally, after an eternity of zero concrete updates, Lord and Miller announced that the film would be released on July 26, 2025 earlier this year. Now, of course, the film has been pushed back yet again, this time only a few weeks. By the timeBeyond the Spider-Versereleases in theaters, it will have been nearly nine years since the firstSpider-Versemovie hit theaters. Let’s put it this way: since 2018, Tom Holland will have appeared in threeSpider-Manmovies and at least twoAvengersfilms (possibly three if he’s secretly inAvengers: Doomsday) by the time the thirdSpider-Versefilm comes out. Wild stuff.
