Ten classicCall of Dutygames, including iconic entries such asBlack Ops 2,World at War, and the originalModern Warfare 2, will be undergoing server maintenance on July 2 for a mysterious background update. Although it’s not unheard of for newerCall of Dutytitles, such as last year’sBlack Ops 6, to receive new content updates and hotfixes, entries that were released in the days of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 don’t usually receive the same treatment, which has led to some confusion among the community.

Call of Duty Fans Speculate on Mysterious Update

The unexpected update for theseiconicCall of Dutygameshas led to rampant speculation among the community. Some Twitter users, such asDANNYonPC, are speculating that the server maintenance could be to bring moreCall of Dutygames to Xbox Game Pass. But with the likes ofWorld War 2and 2023’sModern Warfare 3already on Game Pass, not everyone is so sure. Others believe that Activision may finally be implementing a better anti-cheat system for some of the older entries in the series, such as the originalModern Warfare 2andBlack Ops. Many of these classic titles are unplayable online, as most servers have been taken over by hackers and cheaters.

There’s also the possibility that this is nothing more than a background update that will have no effect on players, but only time will tell. There has been a continued effort by Activision and Microsoft to bring olderCall of Dutygames to Game Pass, which means today’s server maintenance could be part of the studio’s future plans.

It was just earlier this week thatCall of Duty: WW2was added to Xbox Game Pass, making it the fourth entry in the series to release on the service.Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3(2023) was the first to join the service, followed by a day one release forBlack Ops 6, then 2022’sModern Warfare 2, and, most recently, Sledgehammer Games' 2017 title,WW2.
