Summary
Severanceseason 2 finally arrived in January 2025 after the longest wait ever, and it thankfully didn’t disappoint. Filled with its usual mysteries and brain-scratching shenanigans, the strange world of Lumon enthralled fans once more as they saw the return of its severed employees, who were on a mission to unravel the truth of Lumon’s goals, the significance of Cold Harbor, and the true purpose of the Macrodata Refinement department. Now, as Apple’s hit second season receives 27 nominations at the Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series, the third season ofSeverancemight not arrive as soon as fans had thought.
Starring Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette,Severanceseason two took viewers deeper inside the walls of Lumon Industries than ever before, as Mark tried to understand whereMs Casey had disappeared to. Just like its first season, fans were left in the dark for much of its return regarding what Lumon was actually up to with their severed employees, and alsowhat was happening with Ms Cobelas she fought to return to MDR so she could watch Mark complete Cold Harbor, one of the biggestSeverancemysteries. However, the episode’s final moments revealed that the severed Helly R is still present, leaving the question of whether Helena was in charge the entire time or if her love for Mark is real after all.
Severance Season 3 Hasn’t Begun Production Yet
Talking withVariety,Matt Cherniss, who is Apple TV+’s head of programming, revealed that production on the new season has not yet started.This, of course, is a worrying sign for fans as it’s already been four months since season 2 ended. Cherniss did acknowledge the lengthy wait between seasons one and two ofSeverancefor fans and recognized that it wasn’t an ideal timeframe and something that he doesn’t really want to repeat. “No one wants it to be another three-year gap,” said Cherniss, although in the same breath, he did say that season 3 currently doesn’t have a production date; however, “we’re moving in that direction.”
“I think everyone’s just going to take a deep breath and enjoy where we’re at. I know they’re going as quickly as they can. When you have the success that a show like ‘Severance’ has, you want to ensure you deliver on every level when the show comes back, and that takes some time. But they’re on it, and I think I’m feeling really good about where we’re at.”
With no confirmed start date for production onSeveranceSeason 3, there could be another extended gap that now looks increasingly possible. Cherniss admitted that he’s “as excited as everyone else to see where the series goes”, before revealing that he “may have a few ideas about where it’s heading”, but ultimately, he wants to take a backseat and “be surprised as much as anyone.” It’s understandable why season 3 may not fall into viewers' laps as quickly as they hoped, as making something just as successful as its previous installments takes time, patience, and the right ideas, and this is something, after all, fans would want.
However, another three-year wait would certainly not do season 3 any favors, so here’s hoping the production will start sometime this year, as it would take around 8 months to wrap up, leaving season 3 potentially releasing sometime in 2027. Apple’s record-breaking Emmy nomination success saw the streamer nominated for 81 awards, withSeveranceseason 2alone getting 27 of them, including ones for writing, acting, and directing.
