Sega has put to bed any chances of fan-favorite game,Sonic Adventure 2, making a comeback in the foreseeable future. Initially released in 2001,Sonic Adventure 2is a highly popular entry and one of the most highly rated games to roll out on Dreamcast.
Throughout its history, Sega has had its fair share of highs and lows, from emerging as a notable rival to then console market leader Nintendo in the early ’90s to exiting the console hardware business altogether just a year after the turn of the century. However, all through this time, the one thing about Sega that has stayed consistent is the popularity of its mascot,Sonic the Hedgehog. A slew of games starring the iconic blue speedster have gone on to become memorable hits, and the IP has also been adapted into live-action films with remarkable success. Among the most well-received games in thelong-runningSonicfranchiseisSonic Adventure 2, whose remaster possibilities were recently shot down by a Sega dev.
In an interview withShacknews, Takashi Iizuka, the head of the Sega-owned Sonic Team, was asked about a potential remaster or remake ofSonic Adventure 2coming out in the future. Shutting down any hope that was there, he said that there were “no plans” for such a project at the moment, per the voice-over translation. Iizuka reasoned that bringing the Dreamcast title back in a way that matches the “standards and expectations” of modern gaming would require the same amount of time and energy as it would take to make a new game and that he preferred the latter of the two options. This statement more or less shot down any possibility ofSonic Adventure 2returning, a game that was alsodelisted by Sega in a few countriesin November 2024.
Sonic Adventure 2 Not Getting a Remaster Anytime Soon
The lack of initiative by Sega towards re-releasing its classic titles for today’s audiences is understandably disappointing for longtime fans. To add to this, the gaming giant also notified players about its plan to delist a bunch of mobile ports of some vintage Sega games, ranging fromStreets of RagetoCrazy Taxi. From a preservation perspective as well, multiple popular titles no longer being accessible on modern hardware is a discouraging development.
While Sega may not be looking back, it’s definitely looking ahead, withSonic Racing: CrossWorldsslated to release across PC and consoleson September 25. Most recently, the highly anticipatedSonicgame’s unusual yet intriguing crossovers gained considerable attention among fans.
