Before Netflix came along and totally changed entertainment with mass-scale streaming, people would tune in each week to their favorite sitcoms to watch their beloved characters struggle through comedic trials and tribulations. Current network sitcoms likeAbbott ElementaryandGhostsare still thriving in the new media landscape, but their viewership numbers are a pittance compared to the shows of yesteryear. Now, ABC is bringing back one of those old sitcoms in a gamble to recreate some of that long-gone magic.
News just broke that ABC has issued aScrubsreboot a straight-to-series order, meaning a brand-new season of the classic sitcom is set to air this fall. Longtime fans will be delighted to know that Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke are all set to return as John “J.D.” Dorian, Christopher Turk, and Elliot Reid, respectively.Bill Lawrence, creator of the original series and the man behind current hits likeTed LassoandShrinking, is set to be an executive producer on the series. Tim Hobert and Assem Batra, two veterans of theScrubswriting room, are on board as showrunners.

AScrubsreboot has been rumored about and speculated on for years now, as the show found continued popularity through syndication on networks likeComedy Centraland various streaming services. For their part, Braff and Faison began aScrubs-themed podcast titledFake Doctors, Real Friendsat the height of the COVID pandemic and have been seen together in numerous T-Mobile commercials over the past few years.Lawrence has been teasingaScrubsreboot for a long time now, even claiming it was “very close” last year.

It is unclear if otherScrubscast members will be joining the reboot or not, butDeadlinealso reports that series regular Judy Reyes has had positive talks about returning in some capacity, even though she’s currently starring on ABC’sHigh Potential. It’s hard to imagine any incarnation ofScrubswithout John C. McGinley as Dr. Perry Cox or Neil Flynn as the Janitor, but crazier things have happened in the realm of television. It also seems unlikely that later season additions Eliza Coupe, Kerry Bishé, Michael Mosley, andDave Francowould join the show in any permanent capacity, but appearances from any former cast member are sure to delight fans.
