Xboxmay be working on a massive emulation platform for its older consoles, if a new rumor is to be believed. As the gaming industry has largely moved toward digital media and consoles have become incompatible with older games, backward compatibility and preservation have become bigger concerns for many gamers. Thankfully,Xboxcould have something in the works to keep its old titles alive.

Microsoft has already said the company is committed to preserving video games for future generations. In 2024,Xbox founded a future-proofing teamto ensure its current lineup remains playable on new consoles down the line, so fans won’t need to hang on to their old systems to relive their favorite nostalgic titles. Now it seems it may go a step further and bring back some classics from previous hardware generations.

Leaker and Xbox news YouTuber eXtas1s claimed to hear from an inside source that an upcoming service called “Xbox Classics” will run original Xbox and Xbox 360 games on new hardware. A job listing earlier this year revealedXbox is working on the “next evolution” in backward compatibility, so Classics could be what that posting was referring to. If what eXtas1s says is true, the platform would certainly be a major step forward for game preservation. According to the supposed source, Xbox Classics wouldn’t just make older games playable but would optimize them for new systems, including graphical improvements, bug fixes, and full Xbox Game Pass support.

Xbox Classics Could Bring Original Xbox and Xbox 360 Titles to New Consoles

Xbox Classics, the name of which is liable to change, will reportedly work across the Series X and S, the cloud, andthe recently announced ROG Xbox Ally, potentially even coming to mobile and smart TVs eventually. From the sounds of it, the platform won’t resurrect the entire Xbox and 360 libraries, but some rumored titles includeFable 2,Gears of War 3, andBatman: Arkham Asylum.Modernizing a large lineup of classics may seem like a big order, but third-party emulators often offer some performance improvements, so it’s certainly not out of the question for a company as big as Microsoft.

As with all leaks, fans should take the news with a grain of salt. The emulation service would be a welcome change, though, especially in light of howXbox may be phasing out physical games, raising preservation concerns. According to eXtas1s, Microsoft will formally announce the platform in 2026, which will be the 25th anniversary of the OG Xbox, so gamers can look forward to next year to see if the rumors are true.
