Final Fantasy 16producer Naoki Yoshida and creative director Kazutoyo Maehiro hinted that the gritty action title could head to Nintendo Switch 2 if the team can manage it. Yoshida said that, sinceFinal Fantasy 16is available on PlayStation 5, PC, and now Xbox Series X/S, all that is left for the development team to potentially work with is Nintendo’s latest console.
WhileFinal Fantasy 16is available on various platforms, Square Enix left the door open for another port. In the closing segment ofFinal Fantasy 14’s Letter From the Producer LIVE Part 87 broadcast, Yoshida introduced Maehiro to promoteFinal Fantasy 16’s Xbox launch. According to translations by Twitter user Genki_JPN, after naming all the current platformsFinal Fantasy 16is currently supported on, Yoshida said, “All that’s left is Nintendo.”
Final Fantasy 16 Developers Hint at Potential Switch 2 Port
Maehiro echoed Yoshida’s statement and said that he wanted to “conquer it” when it came to developing games on Nintendo’s new system. Currently, the Switch 2 can utilize backward compatibility to playFinal Fantasyentries released for the original Switch console, including theFinal Fantasy Pixel Remastercollection andFinal Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age.
Althoughthird-party launch window titles for the Switch 2have struggled compared to first-party games likeMario Kart World, the exception has beenCyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition. CD Projekt Red’s open-world RPG has become the third-best-selling launch title on the Switch 2 as of this writing. Given thatCyberpunk 2077andFinal Fantasy 16are both graphically demanding titles, it stands to reason that the latter could potentially run on the Switch 2 after some optimizations.
As it stands, Creative Studio 3’s next single-player project is thehighly anticipatedFinal Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, which will receive a Switch 2 version alongside other platforms. Though all rumors must be taken with a grain of salt, only time will tell ifFinal Fantasy 16will receive a Switch 2 port.
