Evidence of a potentialGrand Theft Auto 4remaster or port continues to mount up, as fans discover the Rockstar Games support website now lists the 2008 title for the PlayStation 4, a platform it is not currently available on. Although Rockstar Games is now approaching the homestretch withGrand Theft Auto 6, it looks like a potential current-gen port of the iconicGrand Theft Auto 4could be released first.
Initially released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2008,Grand Theft Auto 4is often considered one of the greatest entries in the series. Despite the fact that it is now 17 years old, fans are still playingGrand Theft Auto 4regularly, but on much older hardware (or PC). While Xbox users can play on the newest generation of consoles thanks to its backward compatibility, fans of the series have been calling forRockstar to remasterGrand Theft Auto 4for years now. A full-blown remaster is unlikely, but evidence of a potential port to newer consoles, such as the PlayStation 5 via forward compatibility from the PS4, is now seeming increasingly likely.
Earlier this year, a trusted insider claimed that Rockstar Games has beenworking on a current-gen port ofGrand Theft Auto 4for over a year now, with a release possibly coming later this year. This claim has yet to be verified by an official source, but now fans have discovered that theRockstar support websitelists the PlayStation 4 as a platform forGrand Theft Auto 4,leading to further speculation that a re-release could be imminent. Of course, this could also just be an honest mistake, but given that it’s only been a couple of months since rumors began circulating, this would certainly be pretty coincidental timing for such a mistake.
Rockstar Could Be Entirely Focused On GTA 6
WithGrand Theft Auto 6’s release datenow just 10 months away, Rockstar Games likely has the majority of its resources focused on its next big release. When the studio publishedGrand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Editionin 2021, it outsourced the development to Grove Street Games. For now, everything remains merely speculation and rumors, but there’s the possibility that the studio has once again outsourced work on aGrand Theft Auto 4port to another studio, given that it is currently developing one of the biggest video game releases of all time.
Talks of a remaster or port have spread like wildfire throughout theGTAcommunity, with many, of course, on board with the idea. But it’s not just fans who want to see it happen. Shortly after the rumor arose, Former Rockstar technical directorObbe Vermeij commented on a potentialGrand Theft Auto 4remaster, stating that it is a “great game” and that it should be remastered. Hopefully, Rockstar hears the requests and makes it happen beforeGTA 6is in the hands of gamers next year.
