Rick’s daughter Beth Smith’s clone Space Beth (Sarah Chalke) has been a notable and entertaining part ofRick and Mortyseason 8.Space Beth is first introduced in season 4and comes back inseason 8, episode 2, “Valkyrick.“It’s fun to hear that both Beth and Space Beth will be in episode 6, and the other main storyline sounds great, too. It’s easy to imagine how much chaos Rick could cause at an amusement park, especially if he tries to change one of the existing rides or comes up with a quirky scientific idea. After all, Rick can’t just go on a ride, get some junk food, and call it a day. He’s definitely going to start up some trouble and get some other characters involved, too.

Summer shocked by space Beth Rick and Morty

In an interview withGizmondobeforeRick and Mortyseason 8 premiered, creator Dan Harmon talked about the philosophy behind Space Beth. He said:

“For me, it’s always been like, ‘Well, who are you?’ It’s a nature versus nurture thing. Notably, we don’t know if it’s Space Beth or domestic Beth that is the clone.”

Space Beth works so well sinceBeth and Rick have a difficult and unique dynamic. Although of course this family is dealing with clones and outer space, which sets them apart fromother animated sitcom characters, Rick and Beth’s tough father/daughter relationship is relatable for many. Through Space Beth, the show examines how families can try to connect after years of miscommunication or mistakes being made. Beth also knows that Rick and Morty are close, which complicates things.

As Harmon said during a panel at the 2020 The Paley Center for Media’s 8th annual PaleyFest NY, fans aren’t sure who is the Clone Beth and who is the real Beth, and that’s by design (viaBleedingcool.com). Space Beth was introduced to drive home how problematic Rick was as a parent. While it would be cool to see her more often, she feels special because she doesn’t appear in every single episode.
