Game Freak’sPokemon Legends: Z-Ais a mere three months away from its October 16 release date, the latest mainlinePokemongame release sincePokemon ScarletandViolet’s launch in late 2022. Despite the upcoming launch, there’s still much left unknown aboutPokemon Legends: Z-A’s story and varied gameplay mechanics. It’s expected that The Pokemon Company and Game Freak will reveal more information onZ-Aat the upcoming Pokemon Presents event on Tuesday, July 22, similar to how the August 2022 Pokemon Presents showed off more ofScarletandViolet’s features. However, The Pokemon Company may want to hold on revealing all of its expected Mega Evolution content untilZ-A’s launch.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Rumored Mega Evolutions Explained
As soon as it was announced that the next mainlinePokemongame would take players back to the Kalos region, many fans suspected that Game Freak would introduce new Mega Evolutions similar to the newHisuian regional forms introduced inPokemon Legends: Arceus. A new Mega Evolution hasn’t been introduced inPokemongames since the release ofPokemon Omega RubyandAlpha Sapphire, and Mega Evolution hasn’t been accessible sincePokemon Sun,Moon,Ultra Sun, andUltra Moon. Given this Mega Evolution gap and the return to Kalos, it made sense for Game Freak to develop new Mega Evolutions forPokemon Legends: Z-Ato entice new and returningPokemonplayers.
When footage ofPokemon Legends: Z-Awas first shown off in the February 2025 Pokemon Presents, Mega Evolution was finally shown off in proper gameplay through preexisting Mega Evolutions, but no new Mega Evolutions were revealed or even teased. However, throughout mid and early March, several crediblePokemonleakers announced that27 Pokemon will receive Mega EvolutionsinPokemon Legends: Z-A. These leaked Mega Evolutions include:
None of these new Mega Evolutions have been confirmed by Game Freak, and it’s currently unknown how their appearances and typings will change, similar to a few previous Mega Evolutions.
An Argument to Hold Off on Revealing Every New Z-A Mega Evolution
Following the release of these supposed Mega Evolution leaks, many fans are anticipating that they’ll be shown off at the upcoming Pokemon Presents. While it would be exciting to see some classic Pokemon Mega Evolve beforePokemon Legends: Z-A’s launch, it may be better for Game Freak to hold off on revealing every new Mega Evolution at the Pokemon Presents. It’s unlikely thatZ-Awill debut new Kalos regional forms, making the new Mega Evolutions the only new Pokemon forms debuting inZ-A. By withholding most Mega Evolutions untilZ-A’s launch, this would allow most players to discover the new forms on their own and make it more exhilarating for players when they witness these critters Mega Evolving for the first time in-game.
Instead, the Pokemon Presents could show off gameplay and details of a handful of new Mega Evolutions coming toPokemon Legends: Z-A. With the game being primarily based in Kalos’ Lumiose City, Game Freak could feature Mega Chesnaught, Mega Delphox, and Mega Greninja in the Pokemon Presents to illustrate howZ-Ais building off of elements fromthe nearly 12-year-oldPokemon XandY. Game Freak could also reveal Mega Drampa or Mega Falinks to show that Pokemon created afterXandYcan receive Mega Evolutions, not just those from generations 1-6. It may be wise to especially hold off on revealing Mega Eternal Flower Floette and Mega Zygarde at the Pokemon Presents as they’ll likely play pivotal roles inZ-A’s story.
