Patch 1.7 forPeakhas been released, adding localization support and tweaking a number of game mechanics. Developed as a collaborative effort between indie game studios Aggro Crab and Landfall Games,Peakis a humorous climbing game that tasks up to four players with difficult climbs up steep cliffsides. Incorporating survival mechanics such as hunger, stamina, and scavenging, players must work together if they want to navigate through the game’s procedurally generated terrains successfully.
Aggro Crab and Landfall, known collectively as Landcrab, releasedPeakon June 16 and quickly went viral.Peaksold 1 million copies in just six days, shooting up the Steam charts and reaching a 24-hour peak of over 100,000 players. With its low price tag, high replayability, and humorous gameplay mechanics,Peakeven managed to outsell AAA titles likeElden Ring: NightreignandDune: Awakeningin terms of revenue, prompting the indie developers to direct their focus to supporting their surprise hit as much as possible.
Update 1.7 for the co-op climber was released on July 11, bringing a number ofplanned changes toPeakpreviously promised by the developers. One major addition made in the update is increased localization, bringing the number of supported languages to 12. Players who boot up the game before reading the new patch notes may learn about some changes the hard way. For example, climbers attempting to pass along a whole coconut are now liable to bonk their fellow scout. On the other hand, players can use this to their advantage, as fruits and other items can now be thrown at beehives to knock them down.
Another interesting tweak made in the update affects the Anti-Rope Spool andAnti-Rope Cannon inPeak, the weights of which have both been adjusted to -1 instead of 0, causing them to float away the second they leave a scout’s hands. The change to these powerful items is marked as a balance change in the patch notes, and it isn’t clear if their new floaty property will be permanent. It’s not all bad news though, as both Rope Shooters and Anti-Rope Shooters now fire 50% more rope than before.
It’s unlikely the new Anti-Rope shenanigans will deter players consideringPeak’s reputation as an already unpredictable game. The game thrives on failure and the humorous moments it can bring, which has madePeaksteams popular with Twitch viewers. Here’s hoping Landcrab’s next update forPeakbrings more new content to keep players climbing.
