Luffy may be a pirate, but at the end of the day, he’s someone that the fans root for, no matter what. That said,Oda himself considers making Luffy into a big villain, and while this might sound surprising to the fans, it actually makes perfect sense.
Luffy Is Going To Become The Pirate King
WhenOne Piecebegan, it was quite clear for the fans to see that Luffy had an indomitable will and a thirst for adventure. These two things combined meant that I the Great Pirate Era, Luffy was destined for the seas. Having someone like Shanks in his life watching over him and egging him on only meant that Luffy would go on to idolize him and follow in his footsteps. Given thatShanks himself was a pirate, Luffy wanted to be one too.

Shanks and Luffy made a promise, where the former asked Luffy to return his Straw Hat to him once he becomes a Great Pirate. Luffy also promises to Shanks that he will go on to surpass him and make a crewthat surpasses the Red Hair Pirates. To this day, this promise has not been fulfilled, but it is hard to deny that Luffy is working towards it with great intensity.

While Luffy is certainly going to become the Pirate King at the end ofOne Piece, fans know very well that this means becoming a big villain. To the fans who read the story, Luffy is a Hero and an inspiration. But, to the people of the world who only hear of him through rumors, Luffy is a demon and a big villain. Oda himself says that he considers the Pirate King to be a huge villain. In other words,once Luffy becomes the Pirate King, to the rest of the world, he will be a massive villain.

While Luffy is seen as a villain by many, he is actually anything but that. Luffy might not want to be a Hero, but he certainly is. As Nika,Luffy is the Warrior of Liberation, and he frees the slaves a brings a smile to the faces of the people. Luffy will always stand against oppression, and that’s his nature as the third coming of Nika.
