Summary

Of all the aspects that makeOne Pieceone of the greatest stories of all time, the mystery and allure of the world definitely take the top spot. Oda is an expert at worldbuilding, really taking his time with minute details that only bear fruit hundreds of chapters after first being shown. This is something that has led to some of the best moments and reveals in the entire series.

One thing that fans expect to be equally groundbreaking is Luffy’s true dream. From the early days ofOne Piece, everyone knew thatLuffy always aspired to be the King of the Pirates, but in Chapter 1060, he revealed that he had another dream which he held for seemingly even longer. There has been a lot of discussion regarding what this could be, but this theory may be the best at explaining it.

Ever since it was first teased, there have been numerous theories seeking to explain whatLuffy’s true dream could be, and while they are typically good and make sense within the story, they don’t seem to meet every criterion. Luffy told the Straw Hats that the only people he had ever spoken to about this before were Shanks, Ace, and Sabo, each of whom laughed at it, which further goes to show that Luffy has wanted this since he was a child.

There are a few criteria to keep in mind when it comes to explaining what this dream could end up looking like, since it can only really work if it meets them. These are:

Because of this, the theory of Luffy wanting to go to space makes perfect sense. To start off, Luffy has always been very vocal about his love for adventure, as is seen with him being the most eager person to visit new lands and meet new people, to the point where he got visibly upset whenUsopp asked Rayleigh about the One Pieceback on Sabaody. He outright said that he would rather give up his entire journey on the spot than have a boring adventure where he knew what was awaiting him at the end.

I don’t wanna hear where the treasure is! I don’t even wanna hear if there is a treasure or not! I don’t know anything about it, but everyone sets off to sea to find out for themselves! If Pops were to tell us anything here, then I’ll quit on becoming the Pirate King!

Although theOne Pieceworld is huge and is dotted with innumerable islands, it is still finite, which means that Luffy’s journey will eventually come to an end, which it seems to be getting closer and closer to. Because of this, his wanting to go to space to continue his never-ending adventure would be perfectly in line with the kind of person Luffy is, as well as being something that he would have thought of from a very young age.Enel’s cover story and subsequent lore dropshave revealed the existence of life on the moon and in space in general.

This seems to imply that there is a near-infinite amount of adventures Luffy could have, which would be right up his alley. But, of course, this sounds like an impossibility to achieve, which is likely why Ace and Sabo laughed upon hearing it. However, the most interesting reaction was that of Shanks, who Luffy said had tears in his eyes when he told him.

While some believe that this could be because he laughed so hard, the truth of it meets another one of the criteria, which is that it is the same dream shared by Roger. During the truce betweenthe Roger and Whitebeard Piratesafter their 3-day battle, Roger sat Whitebeard and Oden down in order to plead with his rival to let Oden travel with him to uncover the truth of the world. Here, Roger told them both about his dream, prompting utter shock from Oden and a large, hearty laugh from Newgate, who even called him a fool for having such a childish dream.

This goes perfectly with this theory about Luffy’s true dream as it not only shows how similar he and Roger were, but also their childlike wonderment. Upon hearing how the kid he inspired to take up a life of piracy wanted the same thing as his former captain and father-figure, it makes perfect sense why Shanks' would tear up, knowing that Roger and his will live on through Luffy, and that his entire journey ended up working out.

Perhaps the most damning evidence of this theory comes from the chapter where Luffy reveals his dream to the Straw Hats. Here, Oda makes a very deliberate choice of showing every crew member’s reaction to hearing Luffy’s fantastical dream, which may be the biggest indication as to what he truly meant by it. Firstly, the Thousand Sunny has the ‘!?’ reaction, showing that it was taken off guard upon hearing what Luffy wanted, which is a mixture of surprise and concern, since it would probably be tasked with taking him there.

Zoro and Jimbei, being the logical and stoic characters that they are, are utterly dumbfounded by hearing such an impossible dream, causing them to do a double-take. Nami and Usopp are also shocked at the impossibility but also seem concerned, since they know that Luffy tends to do whatever he sets his mind to, which would cause them to worry about how they would survive such an ordeal.

Sanji, Franky, and Brook all burst out laughing, which they would only really do if the dream sounded utterly ridiculous and completely outside the realm of possibility, to whichSanji even tells Chopper to examine Luffy’s headto see if everything is alright with it. Robin’s reaction of shock is honestly vague and doesn’t give away much, but Chopper’s reaction may be the most damning of them all here.

Upon hearing Luffy’s dream, Chopper’s reaction is that of utter surprise and wonderment, which he has only ever shown before once he sees something fantastical. Only upon hearing something so out of the ordinary like going to space would warrant such a reaction for him. Lastly, a small piece of evidence as to why this may be the case is because when Luffy revealed the truth of his dream, he was lying on his back and staring up at the sky, while the Thousand Sunny itself was uncharacteristically angled upwards, which could be a subtle implication.

How Does The One Piece Treasure Fit Into All Of This?

The Legendary Treasure

When probed on the impossibility of having such a dream, Luffy said that achieving something like this may be possibleonce he becomes the Pirate King, which itself is only done through finding the One Piece treasure. Because of this, supporters of this theory have speculated that the treasure itself would be the thing that would allow Luffy to achieve this dream in the first place. While impossible to confirm, the theory is that the One Piece is actually a spacecraft shaped like a giant Straw Hat.

While this seems incredibly silly, it does make sense. This is because Roger and his crew laughed when they found the treasure, and seeing a giant Straw Hat that exists on the most difficult-to-reach island that has been expunged from the annals of history as the greatest treasure of all time would definitely be something that would warrant such a reaction.

Oh Joyboy… I wish I had been born in your time!

Plus, it should be remembered that there were races who lived on the moon who eventually came down to the Earth thousands of years ago, such as the Lunarians. It’s possible that they were only able to do so with the help of such a spacecraft. In fact, even the shape of the UFOs that we know about do share some similarities to a Straw Hat in terms of how they look.

Now, this could either be a ship itself which allows space travel, as it may have done for the Moon Races thousands of years ago, or may just be something that can be used to do so, which would then be used to make the Thousand Sunny a spacecraft as well. However, admittedly, this is quite a reach and fans can only wait until Oda himself reveals the truth of one of the biggest mysteries in fiction.
