Summary
As the most iconic power system inOne Piece(but not the only one),Devil Fruitsare inherently extremely memorable and hard to miss. These mysterious fruits give anybody who eats them bizarre and/or fantastical powers, like manipulating a natural element, summoning a specific object, transforming into an animal, etc.
However, and to the surprise of many people, there are a lot of characters in this long-running series that have eaten a Devil Fruit and acquired their powers, and yet, most fans have completely forgotten about it because they were either used very rarely or because series' creator Eiichiro Oda didn’t specify they were Devil Fruit powers until much later. The followingOne Piececharacters are the most prominent examples of this odd phenomenon.
1Tsuru
Ate The Woshu Woshu No Mi
Tsuruis a legendary Marine Vice Admiral who’s said to be on the same level as Monkey D. Garp and Sengoku, so naturally, she’s supposed to be very experienced and very powerful. Nevertheless, unlike her two, more famous colleagues, she has Devil Fruit powers, but she has only used them on-screen once in the entire series.
She ate theWoshu Woshu no Mi, which seemingly allows her to turn people into clothes, wash them, and put them out to dry. This is a bizarre power, no doubt, but it can be quite useful, especially when considering that (according to Oda himself) she can also use it to “clean up” the evil in her opponent’s hearts. As interesting as the Woshu Woshu no Mi is, Tsuru only used its powers during the Marineford Arc, and due to how the scene was cut, it was never properly shown how exactly they work. Tsuru is one of the most interesting but underutilized Marine officers in the entire series, so hopefully, she and her Devil Fruit powers will get their chance to shine soon.
2Chaka
Ate The Inu Inu No Mi, Model: Jackal
During the Arabasta Arc, audiences were introducedto the two headguards of the kingdom: Pell andChaka. However, the former was a much more memorable character than the latter, seeing as he got way more involved in the story and even used the powers of his Zoan-Type Devil Fruit, the Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Falcon, to save Alubarna from a giant bomb. Chaka, on the other hand, used his Devil Fruit transformation just once, and it wasn’t particularly remarkable.
He ate theInu Inu no Mi, Model: Jackal, which (as its name suggests) allows him to turn into a jackal and, as a result, enhances his speed and physical strength in the process. This seems like a very basic Zoan-Type Devil Fruit, and the fact that Chaka only used it once, to attack Sir Crocodile, and it wasn’t very effective because of the villain’s Logia powers, makes it even more forgettable. He hasn’t even revealed if he can even take advantage of the other physical properties of a jackal (like its excellent hearing and/or eyesight).
3Urouge
Ate An Unnamed Damage Conversion Devil Fruit
Audiences were introduced to the pirates of the “Worst Generation” during the Sabaody Archipelago Arc, and from that point onwards, almost all of them went on to have crucial roles in one or two story arcs, in which they got their chance to showcase their unique personalities and Devil Fruit abilities.The only exception (so far) is Mad MonkUrouge, who hasn’t done much since his debut.
Because of his lack of screen time, most fans may have already forgotten that he ate anunnamed Devil Fruitthat allows him to convert any damage he receives into physical strength and enlarge his body’s size. Even though Urouge very clearly showcased this fascinating ability to confront a Pacifista during the Sabaody Archipelago Arc, many viewers still missed it, so Oda had to clarify that he ate a Devil Fruit in an official data book. Other members of the “Worst Generation” who were introduced alongside him, like Kid or Bonney, spent years without receiving a name for their respective Devil Fruits, until they got involved in an important story arc. So it’s most likely that the exact same thing will happen to Urouge the moment Oda decides to use him again.
4Morgans
Ate The Tori Tori No Mi, Model: Albatross
When “Big News”Morgansmade his debut during the Whole Cake Island Arc, many fans mistakenly believed that his bird-like appearance was because he belonged to some sort of anthropomorphic avian race, similar to the mammalian Minks. However, he is actually a human who ate theTori Tori no Mi, Model: Albatross,and keeps his hybrid form activated to conceal his real identity.
Truth be told, the existence of this Devil Fruit is very easy to miss because it was originally revealed by Oda in an SBS segment of the manga, although it was eventually confirmed in the anime as well. Nevertheless, the fact that Morgans chooses to hide his face with his Zoan powers means that he will most likely reveal it at one point in the near future. Weirdly enough, he doesn’t seem to be able to fly in his hybrid form for some unknown reason, unlike Marco or Pell.
5Raizo
Ate The Maki Maki No Mi
The entire point ofRaizo of the Mist’s character is that he’s a legendary ninja who can wield all sorts of bizarre powers(or “ninjutsu” according to him). Many fans took his claims at face value and, to this day, many of them still believe that he’s just able to use ninjutsu, when he has actually eaten a Devil Fruit called theMaki Maki no Mi, which allows him to create scrolls that can store objects or substances which can be released later.
To be fair, this ability fits perfectly with Raizo’s ninja themes, as he was able to store Kaido’s powerful Bolo Breath and fire it back at him, and he even put out the burning flames in Onigashima by releasing all the water he had previously collected back in Zou. On top of that, like any good ninja, he can also summon clones of himself from his scrolls. All these powers are undoubtedly very useful, but most fans are not even aware of the fact that they originated from a Devil Fruit.
6Pekoms
Ate The Kame Kame No Mi
Pekomsfrom the Big Mom Pirates is the only Mink in the series (so far) who has eaten a Devil Fruit, and yet, most fans have completely forgotten about it because he only used his powers on two brief occasions, and both times they were quite inconsequential. When he confronted Caribou at the very end of the Fish-Man Island Arc, Pekoms transformed into a turtle to block his opponent’s gunshots, thus revealing that he had eaten theKame Kame no Mi.
As its name suggests, this Devil Fruit allows him to transform into a turtle at will and take advantage of its indestructible protective shell. However, only the design of his shell was fully shown when he first used it against Caribou, so viewers never got to see the rest of his transformation. Pekoms used the Kame Kame no Mi only one other time, to shield himself from Bege’s gunshots in Zou, and he has never transformed again ever since, preferring to use his Electro and his Sulong form instead.
7Onimaru
Ate The Hito Hito No Mi, Model: Onyudo
At one point during the Wano Country Arc, Roronoa Zoro was confronted by a giant monk named Gyukimaru, who tried to take Shusui from him.It was later revealed that this wasOnimaru, Kawamatsu’s pet fox, who was tasked with both gathering weapons for the final battle against Kaido and guarding the graves of those who were buried in the Ringo region.
For a long time, many fans mistakenly believed that he was some sort of mythical kitsune who could transform into a human, or maybe even a monk who ate a Zoan-Type fox Devil Fruit, but he’s actually a regular fox who ate theHito Hito no Mi, Model: Onyudo. This Mythical Zoan allows him to transform into an Onyudo at will, which is a classic yokai from Japanese folklore who looks like a giant human-like monk. Of course, the existence of Onimaru and his Devil Fruit is quite easy to miss, seeing as the Wano Country Arc is very long and it’s crowded with all sorts of unique characters and abilities.
8Bunbuku
Ate The Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Tanuki
People mistaking Tony Tony Chopper for a raccoon dog (or tanuki) is one of the oldest and most iconic recurring gags inOne Piece,but, curiously enough, a raccoon dog Devil Fruit has already appeared in the story, and most fans are not even aware of its existence. This is because it wasn’t eaten by a human or an animal, but by an object:Kouzuki Sukiyaki’s teapot, which is calledBunbuku.
That’s right, this teapot somehow “ate” theInu Inu no Mi, Model: Tanuki, which allows it to transform into a raccoon dog and, as a result, is always standing on a huge sack of flesh. This was extremely easy to miss, as it was never clarified within the story, and Oda had to confirm it later in an SBS segment. Furthermore, it was never revealed how and why Sukiyaki transformed his teapot into a raccoon dog (maybe he found it in that state), especially considering that Bunbuku is now susceptible to fire and is not able to boil water anymore, thus losing its main function as a teapot.
