More and more features ofBorderlands 4are rearing their heads ahead of its September launch, be it via leaks or short gameplay videos popping up online, and the skill trees of each Vault Hunter are among the most anticipated. Builds for the various Vault Hunters are always a big part of the game, and a lot of fans like to theorycraft them ahead of launch, or at least know more about their desired character.Borderlands 4’s new Vex trailerdoesn’t really reveal more information about the Siren’s gameplay loop, but it does include some interesting details about her story.
Picking a main Vault Hunter forBorderlands 4ahead of launch can be a tall task, and while knowing all the skills and passives each character has access to would help, theorycrafting is very different from hands-on gameplay. Vex is a peculiar Siren for various reasons. For starters, she is more of a summoner archetype, not too dissimilar from Gaige inBorderlands 2, and she can feel similar to a mix of FL4K and Amara fromBorderlands 3. Another reason that makes Vex a black sheep of sorts is that her background regarding her powers is very strange, as she seemingly got them on a stressful day at her job. However, this makes her very relatable.
One Borderlands 4 Vault Hunter May Be The Most Relatable Ever
The concept of having a bad day on the job, any kind of job, is probably not alien to most people. Vex’s latest trailer shows her past as a retail worker who suddenly finds herself in the middle of “Purple Friday,” a reference to Black Friday, with hordes of people in the store and chaos occurring all over the place. While under pressure from an armed customer, Vex’s arm tattoo shows up and starts glowing, granting her powers. This is when Vex becomes one ofBorderlands' Sirens, and she summons her Dead Ringer, which starts slicing up all customers.
While that’s far from daily life, many potential gamers and longtime fans of the series are likely to find themselves in very stressful situations with little to no way out, if that hasn’t happened yet. Vex can also be very relatable to cashiers and retail workers in general, as the impact of having to deal with a lot of potentially demanding people at once can be burdensome, to say the least. If not for gameplay, Vex is already likely to be a fan-favorite character in the game, so the fact that she has very cool and seemingly powerful abilities could make her a no-brainer pick amongBorderlands 4’s Vault Hunters.
The new Vex trailer interestingly starts with an image on a device screen showing a character similar to the Grim Reaper, with the caption reading “Deathening 4 - Death 4 All,” which is soon revealed to be an in-universe movie, possibly akin to the likes of Scream. Before a customer brings a copy of the movie to Vex at the cash register, she looks bored and mentions warranty purchases to a customer. So, it’s entirely possible that Vex’s powers are a form of manifestation of what she uses to escape, hence why she summons aDead Ringer inBorderlands 4’s trailer, and also why she has an entire skill tree dedicated to this.
Another ofVex’s skill trees inBorderlands 4is called Phase Familiar, and it’s dedicated to a big elemental cat called Trouble, which could very well be an animal companion the Siren had in the past. Between caring for pets, a job she doesn’t like, and the mention in the trailer that even battling terrible creatures and the robotic legions of The Timekeeper is better than retail, Vex seems the most down-to-earth character in the series so far, and thus one of (if not the) most relatable.
