Battlefield 6has finally been officially revealed via a trailer that paints it as a much more grounded successor toBattlefield 2042. After the months of disaster surroundingBattlefield 2042’s launch, from which the game never truly recovered, such a creative pivot is no doubt welcome news to manyBattlefieldfans.

This reeled-in tone will be expressed throughBattlefield 6’s campaign, a game mode that was infamously omitted fromBattlefield 2042. Players will be fighting on behalf of NATO and against an armed militia known as the Pax Armata. The Pax Armata is being funded by defected NATO countries and is attempting to expand their influence through sieges and terrorist attacks, which the player is tasked with thwarting. This emphasis on modern warfare and global politics is enough to make any fan of war games excited, butBattlefield 6’s high-level themes and apparent storytelling style might make some old-schoolCall of Dutyplayers perk up their ears.

So Far, Battlefield 6 Is Looking a Lot Like Classic Call of Duty

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Is Looking Decidedly Non-Military

Based on its recently released teaser trailer,Black Ops 7is going to be less about boots-on-the-ground military operations and more about psychological thrills and sci-fi themes. The teaser follows David Mason, son ofBlack Ops 1’s Alex Mason, as he meets with The Guild. This meeting segues into a series of reality-defying visuals, depicting David navigating otherworldly realms. The imagery and general tone of the trailer makeBlack Ops 7seem more like a Remedy game than a newCall of Duty.

And for some, this is a good thing. It would seem thatBO7is channeling the first game in the series a bit, as that inaugural release was explicitly designed around psychological themes and psychedelic setpieces; theBlack Ops 7teasereven pays homage to its predecessor by showing David in a room full of TVs, an ostensible reference toBlack Ops 1’s famous interrogation room. But nevertheless, it doesn’t exactly screamCall of Duty, and audiences hoping for a more robust, realistic, traditional military shooter might be disappointed by this continued tendency toward sci-fi and psychological thriller tropes.

Battlefield 6 Looks Like the Perfect Call of Duty Successor

Based on currently available information,Battlefield 6seems like the most likely game to pick up whereCall of Dutyleft off. TheBF6trailer showcases the aforementioned political-thriller themes of the game’s narrative, which has shades ofModern Warfare’s plot, but the presentation style of the game is worth noting as well.Battlefield6is ostensibly aiming for a cinematic, setpiece-driven single-player campaign, which is whatCall of Dutyhas always been known for.

Hopefully, these first impressions are indicative ofBattlefield 6as a whole.Battlefield 2042was criticized for several things, but one of them was its adulteration of the series' identity, which some believe to be motivated by a desire to be more like modernCoD. Infamous content drops like theBattlefield 2042Santa Claus skinundermined the ostensibly mature and serious tone of2042, and the overall “Fortnite-ification” of the game came across as cynical and uninspired. WithBattlefield6shaping up to be a more cinematic, sober, and grounded take on a modern war story, it could win over not just embitteredBattlefieldfans, but oldCall of Dutyfans as well.
