Eagle-eyedOblivion Remasteredplayers online have noticed a bizarre change that Virtuos and Bethesda have made to the game. It’s not clear whether thisOblivion Remasteredchange was made intentionally or not, but it’s subtle enough that it has taken players a few months to notice.

Upon its surprise release a few months ago,Oblivion Remasteredwas hailed for its authenticity to the original. It modernized where necessary, particularly in the graphical department and with the addition of mechanics like sprint. It even kept aclassicOblivion Remastereddialogue blooper, which fans were particularly happy to see. It was considered to be a very faithful remaster, which is why it’s surprising to see this one particular element changed.

As noticed byTheGamer, a recent Reddit thread by user AutomatedMiner has noticed a big difference in the statue inOblivion Remastered’s version of Anvil. The statue previously depicted a Selkie, a half-human, half-seal creature. However, this has been changed to a regular mermaid in the remaster, complete with visible scales. It’s not quite clear why this change was made, although AutomatedMiner believes it “was done to provide more detail, as the scales on the statue offer some visual interest that looks very nice.”

Oblivion Remastered Turns Anvil’s Selkie Statue Into a Mermaid

Many comments in the thread were equally surprised to find out that any change had been made at all, with one user saying they’d “never even considered she was anything but a mermaid. I thought the lack of scales was just because of the lower detail in the original.” It was also pointed out that the new statue in theOblivion Remasteredcityis a nod to the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen, Denmark, which seems very plausible given the near-exact matching poses.

This new change is certainly here to stay, even in futureOblivion Remasteredupdates. Bethesda and Virtuos continue to update the game fairly regularly, patching bugs and refining the overall experience. Just recently,Oblivion Remastered’s 1.2 update finally improved the game’s performanceand added additional difficulty settings to allow players to adjust their own experience. Hopefully, the two studios continue this level of support for months to come, as althoughOblivion Remasteredis great, more polish certainly doesn’t hurt.
