One of the most celebrated horror game series of all time is heading to mobile later in 2025 with the announcement ofResident Evil Survival Unit, and several of its multiple playable heroes have now been revealed. The game looks to offer a much different experience than whatResident Evilfans are used to, but the return of so many familiar faces gives them plenty to be excited about.
Announced at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles, the project is being headed up by executive producer Shinji Hashimoto, a longtime employee of Square Enix who retired from the company in 2022. In his time there, Hashimoto has played major roles in the development of 23 differentgames in theFinal Fantasyfranchise. Since his retirement, he’s still been full of ideas, andResident Evil Survival Unitwill be the culmination of one of those in late 2025.
Fans can expect to see the return of severalcharacters from pastResident Evilgames, all of whom will aid players' teams with specific strengths and abilities. Players will start the game awakening in an abandoned hospital after being abducted by Umberlla Corp for experimentation purposes, but they’ll quickly be able to build teams of three characters, balancing their strengths for specific situations. Some popular names on that list include Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Carlos Oliveira, but the game will also offer more minor characters likeResident Evil 2gun shop owner Robert Kendo the chance to shine.
All Resident Evil Survival Unit Playable Characters Confirmed So Far
Along with the playable heroes, who players will be able to upgrade as they progress through the game, another fan-favorite character will be making his return inResident Evil Survival Unit. The talkativemerchant fromResident Evil 4will be gracing players' phone screens, and it sounds like he’ll play an integral role in getting teams ready to head out on missions, selling key items at the mansion that serves as the survivors' center of operation.
Of course, the heroes won’t be the only familiar elements from past Resident Evil games. The game will also play host to terrifying abominations, and Aniplex and JOYCITY have even brought in acclaimedFinal Fantasyartist Yoshitaka Amanoas a guest designer. Amano says he has “a deep appreciation for all things scary,” and while he’s not entirely well-versed inResident Evil’s history, he’s very excited to see his creation — a shadowy, pale-faced creature named Mortem — come to life in an antogonistic role.
