In the first chapter ofBoruto, the titular protagonist,Boruto Uzumaki, strongly reminded Narutoof his younger sister’s birthday. This is the only time in the manga where Boruto personally asked Naruto a favor for the sake of Himawari’s happiness. He was so tired of being neglected, so he didn’t want Himawari to feel the same thing on her most special day. Of course, Naruto had no excuse to not show up, so it was settled that he’d join them for dinner.

However, when the Uzumaki household was in the middle of celebrating Himawari’s birthday, they later discovered that the Naruto who was with them was only a shadow clone. Worse,Naruto’s shadow clone even dropped Himawari’s birthday cake, further disappointing Boruto. This incident still breaks the hearts of many fans around the world as they find it difficult to understand Naruto’s actions.
Could Naruto Have Handled This Mistake Differently?
Boruto Only Asked for One Thing
From the beginning ofBoruto, fans believe Naruto has beenoverly relying on his shadow clonesto attend important family gatherings, including Himawari’s birthday. For Boruto, this is a half-hearted effort, as his father prefers to work at the Hokage office, where his real body resides, instead of spending time with his family. While Hinata understands Naruto’s difficult role as Konoha’s Seventh Hokage, fans believe he could have handled things differently in this unfortunate situation.
What really bothered me was that Shikamaru offered to finish the job for him so Naruto could go home and Naruto said no 😵💫 -RedditorTensionPitiful8681
First of all,Naruto had Shikamaru’s supportfrom the get-go. He asked Naruto to go home and spend some time with his family since he had been burning himself out with all the paperwork. Knowing Shikamaru, he could easily work on behalf of Naruto without trouble for one night. However, Naruto still insisted on prioritizing work over Himawari’s birthday, despite knowing he would end up messing everything up by using a shadow clone.
Naruto & Sasuke are both super mid dads at best. They invest more in children that aren’t theirs than the ones they already have
And it’s crazy to me because they know what missing a parent means -RedditorCoconutxKitten
In Naruto’s defense, he grew up with no parents, with no example to follow. This may have contributed to his struggles as a parent, as he finds it hard to juggle his family life with his Hokage post. Even so, fans know that Naruto, of all people, is trying his hardest to break the cycle of pain and loneliness by being present to his children as best as he can.
Naruto is not abad father but a flawed one inBoruto. The same thing goes with Sasuke, who also tries his hardest to care for Sarada in his own awkward ways. Just because they can be neglectful doesn’t mean they’re already a bad father. Perhaps it’s more right to label them flawed, as they still have good qualities necessary for a great father figure.
Today’s an important day for a Dad! You know why, right?—Boruto to Naruto
In other words, Naruto’s fatherhood inBorutois a realistic portrayal of a parent who tries his hardest to support his children. Although he struggles to meet his children’s expectations, it’s important to note that he still tries to do his best, and sometimes, that might be what matters most. Besides, Naruto is still far from being an irredeemable father, as he learns to understand Boruto’s feelings later in the series.
