Spoilers for the One Piece anime and manga ahead!

Summary

Part of the reason whyOne Piecehas amassed such a massive fan base, other than its lovable cast of characters and intense fight scenes, is the mystery that surrounds this world. Along their grand adventures to reach the One Piece treasure, Luffy and the Straw Hats have ventured through all kinds of weird and wonderful islands, and of course, this has inevitably introduced them to a wide variety of Devil Fruits too.

While the majority of these abilities tend to be pretty straightforward in how they work, there are others that, for one reason or another, remained very obscure and mysterious for a good portion of the story. ConsideringOne Piecehas now been running for over a thousand episodes or chapters, many of these strange fruits have since been revealed, though some still continue to spark online discussions and debates to this very day. With that being said, it’s time to take a look at the Devil Fruits inOne Piecethat had fans guessing the most.

7Rumble Rumble Fruit

The Scale And Range Of Enel’s Abilities Seemed Far Too Powerful For A Devil Fruit At The Time

It’s honestly shocking that Enel shows up so early on in the story, considering he’s undoubtedly one of the strongest characters in the series. Before Enel’s introduction, Devil Fruits had mainly been shown to be fairly simple and straightforward in how they worked, but Enel’s power was on a whole different level. When the Straw Hats finally entered Skypiea, it wouldn’t be long before they started seeing what looked like giant laser beams constantly shooting down from the sky on a regular basis, killing any innocent civilians who got caught up in the blasts.

Because these jolts of energy were so big and explosive, it was hard to determine not only what the power was, but also who was behind it. Eventually, Enel himself would describe how he had been using Haki, which was known as Mantra at the time, in order to aim his lightning strikes atanyone who disobeyed him, even if they were on the other side of the island. Therefore, while the fruit itself is actually pretty basic, the ways Enel went about using it made it very unclear for a while what the power even was.

6Huge Huge Fruit

A Devil Fruit That Could Work In Water?

All it takes is a simple glance to deduce that Sanjuan Wolf’s fruit has something to do with increasing his size, but there was a specific reason why it had so many fans scratching their heads upon seeing it for the first time. Sanjuan Wolf has been shown to be capable ofwalking through water, which should technically be impossible, considering that, by having a Devil Fruit, he is a natural enemy of the sea. This caused many fans to wonder whether Wolf had acquired some kind of special Devil Fruit that was able to counteract this obvious weakness, and if it was one that Blackbeard acquired early in the story through his own devious means.

This lingering question would actually remain a popular topic inOne Pieceforums for several years, until Oda eventually revealed that Sanjuan Wolf’s fruit simply makes him so insanely large that he can resist walking through the water without feeling the full effects. He does still become exhausted if he remains in the sea for too long, but the fact that he was even able to walk across water in the first place is what made his Devil Fruit so strange and mysterious.

5Paw Paw Fruit

Kuma shows up at numerous pointsbefore the timeskipto stop the Straw Hat pirates in their adventure, and though the crew where well aware that the Warlord was immensely powerful, it was always a little tricky to fully understand how exactly his abilities worked. Rather than simply throwing out our attack or creating a defensive barrier, Kuma’s fruit could be used in a plethora of different ways. One moment, he would be able to deflect incoming attacks with his own hands, while the next, he could push out a target’s pain and turn it into a giant bubble which could then be converted into another person.

On Thriller Bark, he was even able to use his paws to seemingly teleport Perona with a single swipe. Needless to say, it was a fruit that fans were clamoring to learn more about, and while the finer details of how it works have been fleshed out a little more since then, especially with Kuma’s recent flashback, it was very hard for fans to wrap their head around what exactly it could do for much of the story.

4Op Op Fruit

Even Today, Fans Are Still Wondering What Law’s Fruit Is Truly Capable Of

Usually, when a Devil Fruit is introduced to the story, fans are given a pretty good idea of how it works, but Law’s fruit, the Op Op no Mi, is a little different. Even today, the exact properties and rules of this fruit can bea little difficult to understand, and it’s because Law seems to have an endless arsenal of abilities that he can throw out at any given time. At a basic level, the Op Op fruit allows Law to essentially play the role of God in his close proximity, meaning he is able to do things like remove people’s organs or even switch their bodies around if they are close enough to him.

However, he is also able to teleport people to a nearby distance and, as seen in Dressrosa, can also summon the Gamma Knife to tear someone to shreds from the inside. Just when it seems like fans have seen everything this fruit has to offer, Law will always have something new up his sleeve to throw out in the middle of battle, making it a fruit that continues to keep fans guessing, even after all this time.

3Bat Bat Fruit

While theEgghead Island arcis packed full of shocking reveals, one smaller revelation that still took many fans by surprise was the true identity of Stussy. It turns out that the secret agent who had been traveling with CP9 was actually a clone made by Vegapunk, who was based on the original Buckingham Stussy, a woman who once traveled the seas as a member of the Rocks Pirates. When the clone suddenly decided to turn on Rob Lucci near the beginning of Egghead, she plunged her teeth into his neck to knock him out, though it wasn’t clear at the time whether this was a Devil Fruit ability or just a modification made by Vegapunk.

In the end, the fruit would actually be revealed in one of the SBS Vivre Aards, so it seems clear that the author was purposely keeping it under wraps to fuel speculation and excitement. There is still not a lot known about this fruit, including its full name with the model attached, but it’s still one that Stussy’s been able to put to good use in the few times that she has shown it off.

2Wood Wood Fruit

It Took A Long While Until The Newest Admiral Revealed Himself And His Abilities

After Aokiji stepped away from being an Admiral, fans were left wondering who exactly would end up filling the third spot, considering there were barely any hints as to who it could be for several story arcs. Back in the Reverie, fans were given their first glimpse at a mysterious figure known only as Greenbull, and though it was clear he was an Admiral, what was most fascinating was his Devil Fruit ability, and more specifically, the mysteries surrounding it. Greenbull himself dropped a few clues when he stated he hadn’t eaten in several years, but outside of that small tidbit of information, it was up to the fans to guess what sort of powers the latest Admiral truly possessed.

It wouldn’t be until the end of Wano, a few hundred chapters later, that Greenbull would get to show off his natural Wood Wood fruit in all its glory. Greenbull is getting a lot more screen time these days, but for a while, he was someone who was only teased for many episodes and chapters, with the true nature of his Devil Fruit being the hot topic for several years.

1String String Fruit

Doflamingo’s Fruit Isn’t Revealed Until Hundreds Of Episodes After He Debuts

It can be hard to believe, but Doflamingo’s Devil Fruit actually wasn’t officially revealed until the Dressrosa arc. The reason this is so surprising is that the maniacal Warlord himself debuted all the way back in Jaya, and he wasn’t exactly shy about using his fruit in the early story arcs. Back in theMarineford War, for example, Doflamingo was slicing and dicing anyone who dared stand in his way, but because the strings were so thin and hard to see, it was impossible to understand how exactly he was dishing out so much damage without even touching his opponents.

Not only that, Doflamingo was also able to travel long distances in the blink of an eye, leading many to believe that he actually possessed some kind of flying fruit that gave him incredible mobility. In classic Oda fashion, he would wait hundreds of episodes before explaining what the String String Fruit actually is, though in all honesty, even knowing the fruit’s properties doesn’t really give Doffy’s opponents any advantage, since it’s still an incredibly difficult fruit to counter, considering how versatile it is in practice.
