Former Rockstar Games president andGrand Theft Autoproducer Leslie Benzies has allegedly told Build a Rocket Boy staff that the studio will “relaunch"MindsEyeafter its disastrous launch last month. After parting ways with Rockstar in 2016, Benzies formed Build a Rocket Boy in 2018, which released its first title,MindsEye, on June 10. Unfortunately, the game’s release was met with overwhelmingly negative reviews from both players and critics.
Grand Theft Autofans kept a close eye on Build a Rocket Boy after Benzies' departure from Rockstar Games, but the studio’s first game failed to live up to expectations asMindsEyequickly became the worst-reviewed game of the year. Out of every game released in 2025 so far,MindsEyehas by far the lowest Metacritic score. Critic reviews score the game 38 out of 100, while user reviews have it at 2.5 out of 10. Most of the criticism stems from the game being plagued by bugs, glitches, and general performance issues. Players on PlayStation 5 Pro were even reportedly struggling to maintain a solid 30 FPS.
The launch ofMindsEyeis reminiscent ofCyberpunk 2077’sreleasein 2020, as the now critically acclaimed RPG was once in such a poor state that it was briefly removed from the PlayStation Store. CD Projekt Red worked tirelessly to win back the trust of fans and update the game regularly, and it looks like Build a Rocket Boy co-CEO Leslie Benzies is hoping to pull off the same feat forMindsEye. According to anonymous sources who spoke toIGN, Benzies recently addressed staff for the first time since the game’s launch, insisting that the game will “bounce back” and be relaunched.
MindsEye Director Blames Rocky Launch on ‘Saboteurs’
Benzies reportedly went on to tell staff via video call that the game’s disastrous launch was due to internal and external saboteurs. It’s unclear who Benzies believes sabotaged the development ofMindsEye, but it’s not the first type of comment to come out of a Build a Rocket Boy executive’s mouth. Just days before the game’s launch, early previews blasted it as a “broken mess,” but co-CEO Mark Gerhard suggested that certain individuals were “100%” beingpaid to talk negatively aboutMindsEye. Gerhard also said that there was a “concerted effort to trash [MindsEye]” by some people who don’t want to see Leslie or Build a Rocket Boy be successful.
Although Benzies appears to be committed to rectifying the game’s disastrous launch, the future ofMindsEyeremains unclear afterBuild a Rocket Boy reportedly experienced layoffsat the studio less than two weeks after the game’s launch.MindsEyecurrently has an ambitious post-launch roadmap that will see new missions, multiplayer, collaborations, and more added to the game.
So far, the studio has been consistent in releasing numerous updates forMindsEye, all of which have been aimed at improving the game’s performance, addressing numerous bugs, and more.MindsEye’s third update was released earlier this week for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with a PC release to follow soon.
