Metaphor: ReFantaziohas surpassed 2 million sales, Sega Sammy announced. While the figure marks a significant milestone for the game, it also indicates thatMetaphor: ReFantazio’s sales were heavily front-loaded and dropped off sharply following the game’s debut.
Atlus’s latest JRPG was released for PC and consoles on Jun 23, 2025. A day later, Segaannounced thatMetaphor: ReFantaziosurpassed 1 million sales, making it Atlus’s biggest launch to date.
During Sega’s latest Management Meeting on June 18, the Japanese gaming giantrevealedthatMetaphor: ReFantaziomanaged to hit 2 million sales by the end of its fiscal year 2025, which concluded on March 31. While the game doubled its launch-day sales in the eight months following release, its performance was heavily front-loaded. The sales drop-off looks particularly stark relative to the publisher’s broader catalog, which has so much staying power thatSega’s older games are outselling new releases 4-to-1.
Sega’s Confirmation of Metaphor: ReFantazio Passing 2 Million Sales
Metaphor: ReFantazio’s 1 million day-one sales initially put it ahead ofPersona 5, which took a month to reach 1.5 million units globally. However,Persona 5surpassed 2 million sales by November 2017, around two and a half months after launch. Poorly redacted figures from Sega’s latest management meeting summary indicate thatPersona 5 Royalsold 1.75 million copies in fiscal year 2025—nearly matchingMetaphor’s total sales during the same period. Despite this,Metaphorlikely generated more revenue, being anew Sega releasewith a higher base price and fewer significant discounts during the observed period.
AlthoughMetaphor: ReFantazio’s first-day sales marked the biggest launch in Atlus’s history, the sharp drop-off noted in Sega’s latest commercial update suggests the game is unlikely to match the staying power ofPersona 5, which is estimated to have sold around 10 million copies across all of its versions—the original,Royal, and theP5Rremaster—as of mid-2025. Right now, the game’s success appears to be in the ballpark of thePersona 5 StirkersARPG spin-off, which was previously confirmed to have sold 2 million copies as of November 2023, three and a half years following its release.
Metaphor: ReFantazio Devs Already Working on Their 3rd Game
Metaphor: ReFantaziowas the first original project from Studio Zero, an internal Atlus team formed in 2016 and staffed byPersonaseries veterans, including Katsura Hashino, Shigenori Soejima, Yuichiro Tanaka, and Azusa Kido. The same team previously worked onCatherine: Full Body, an enhanced re-release of the 2011 puzzlerCatherine, which launched in 2019. In an October 2024 interview, Studio Zero head Katsura Hashino confirmed that his department had already started working on its next project, albeit without sharing any specifics.
