Ahead of theMarvel RivalsSeason 3.5 update, developer NetEase Games announced the introduction of an automated in-game chat moderation system called “Operation: Shield the Community” aimed at safeguarding the game’s play environment. While this system would curb toxic chat behavior inMarvel Rivals, the developer did not state what penalties players could incur if flagged.
The news came afterMarvel Rivalsreleased the patch notes for its July 31 update, which will bring somenew Phoenix-themed skins for Black Panther and Magik. A new Twitch Drops campaign was also revealed by NetEase ahead of theMarvel RivalsIgnite Mid-Season Finals tournament taking place in China from August 6 to 10. The July 31 update will also make fixes to Hela and Hulk. The former’s Ultimate ability, Goddess of Death, should be less prone to interruptions stemming from a player’s connection issues. Hulk’s Incredible Leap will also receive fixes in the upcoming patch, which should prevent erratic movements on stairs.
Withthe July 31 update right around the corner,Marvel Rivalsturned its attention to another key feature of the upcoming Season 3.5 that begins a week later.As reported by ComicBook,Marvel Rivalsgame director Guangyan “Guanggang” Chen stated in a Season 3.5 Dev Vision video that NetEase is launching an automated in-game chat moderation system dubbed “Operation: Shield the Community.” This initiative will change the in-game moderation tools inMarvel Rivals, and is aimed at deterring “toxic behavior” in both text and voice chats. However, Guanggang did not state what the penalties would be if a player was caught by the automated chat moderator. It is also not clear how bans would be administered as a result.

However, the director confirmed that any automated reports taken by the system would be subject to a human review, just to ensure that any false positives are not punished. Guanggang stated that some of thechanges began on July 24, more than two weeks ahead of the planned Season 3.5 update. Ergo, it is unclear if some of the moderation changes are already in the game or if theMarvel Rivalsdirector misspoke. It remains to be seen how the automatic in-game chat moderation tools will fare compared to reports from players.
Along withthe addition of Blade inMarvel RivalsSeason 3.5, the August 8 update will also give players a text chat option that mutes certain words automatically. Only time will tell what other changes NetEase will make to keepMarvel Rivalssafe for all players.
