2025 has seen several major changes in how Wizards of the Coast approaches crossover sets inMagic: the Gathering. The developer announced that, starting with theFinal Fantasyset, new Universes Beyond expansions will officially be legal in the game’s Standard format alongside the typical in-universe sets. Wizards of the Coast also regularly introduces new crossovers through its “Secret Lair” drops,ranging everything fromAssassin’s CreedtoJurassic World. A new Secret Lair is now bringing one of gaming’s most recognizable characters toMagic: the Gathering.
As reported by IGN,Magic: the Gatheringhas officially announced three brand-new Secret Lair releases based aroundSonic the Hedgehog. The announcement confirmed that three separate Secret Lairs will be launching for Sonic and friends, featuring both entirely new cards andSonicversions ofpre-existingMagiccards. The “Turbo Gear” Secret Lair will introduceSonic the Hedgehog-themed versions of several popular Artifact cards, including “Swiftfoot Boots” reprinted as “Air Shoes” and “Lightning Greaves” as “Power Sneakers.“Magic: the Gathering’s firstSonic the HedgehogSecret Lair will be available for purchase on July 14.
Magic: the Gathering Reveals Sonic the Hedgehog Cards
The launch of the newSonic the HedgehogSecret Lair will bring plenty of exciting new cards and powerful reprints with aSonicflavor. The reprinted cards are all expected to work in conjunction with thenewSonic the Hedgehogcrossover cards, likely focused around the “Flash” and “Haste” mechanics. The selection of reprints also includes some cards which boast significant prices on the secondary market, with “Piko Piko Hammer” as a new version of “Hammer of Nazahn,” which has only seen three different printings.
Magic: the Gatheringhas lots more on the way beyond its newestSonic the Hedgehogcrossover throughout the year. During the recent MagicCon Las Vegas, Wizards of the Coast showed off thefirst card from the upcomingAvatar the Last Airbenderset, depicting Aang in his Avatar form. Wizards of the Coast has also begun to tease its next in-universe expansion as well, confirming that the popular “shock lands” will be making a return to the Standard format in “Edge of Eternies.“Magic: the Gatheringfans should have plenty to be excited for throughout 2025 and into 2026.
