Jacob Tremblay and Nick Offerman co-star in a thriller movie that fans won’t want to miss, andit’s based on an intense and dark true story. The movie marks a departure for both actors, and from the trailer, it’s clear that they each give an impressive and memorable performance. While Offerman is beloved for playing the quirky and gruff Ron Swanson onParks and Recreation, his turn asBill in his movingThe Last of Usseason 1 episodeproves he can take on more dramatic roles with ease.
Tremblay and Offerman’s movie premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 8th, 2025 andwill be released in theaters on July 11th, 2025. It looks like a compelling drama and both actors are perfectly cast in their roles.
What Is Sovereign, The New Thriller Starring Jacob Tremblay And Nick Offerman, About?
The trailer is out now forSovereign,a thriller movie starring Nick Offerman and Jacob Tremblay asa father and son named Jerry and Joe Kane. Jerry has become part ofthe sovereign movement, which is against the government, and as he’s raising Joe on his own, he’s decided to homeschool and travel through the U.S. by car. The Kanes come acrossDennis Quaid’s character, a chief of police named Jim Bouchart, and a terrifying conflict ensues. The story is much darker and more upsetting thanthe police TV dramaThe Rookie, which covers realistic issues but has a lighter tone.
TheSovereigntrailer shows Bouchart asking Joe questions about his life with his father, and when he asks why they travel around and Joe doesn’t attend school, the teenager says, “He says he wants me to be an independent thinker.” As things get worse, Joe looks scared of his father, andOfferman and Tremblay’s performances look impressive. Likethe teaser for the AppleTV+ movieThe Lost Bus, theSovereigntrailer shares a lot of the story but keeps some big twists hidden. While audiences can assume what happens at the end because of the true events that the movie is based on, it’s possible that one or both characters could survive.
Sovereignis based on the real story of Jerry and Joe Kane, who are known as “sovereign citizens,” and the film dramatizes what really happened to them. AsABC Newsreported in 2010, the police stopped the father and son while they were driving in West Memphis, Arkansas. Joe got out of the car and shot at the police officers. Then, Joe and Jerry left, but after they fired their guns at the police officers again, they died.
In an interview withEntertainment Weekly, director Christian Swegal mentioned that while this isa story about politics, it’s also a family story. He said:
“The movie deals with political subject matter, but we tried to make an apolitical film that was really about the people at the center of it. I feel like when people typically approach a film that deals with extremism, there’s judgment that goes along with it. Without excusing it, this was a horrible tragedy. All these fringe conspiracy theory-driven theologies [are] a very real phenomenon in our country, but my interest was really the father-son story.”
This movie is quite a departure from the kinds of projects Offerman and Tremblay usually star in. Offerman’s fans are used to seeing him as the hilarious Ron Swanson onParks and Recreationand other smaller but still notable roles such as Murray Thompson onthe Peacock thriller seriesThe Resort. Tremblay has had a compelling career that has included charming movies likeWonderand horror films likeMike Flanagan’sDoctor Sleep.Sovereigntells a tough, dark, and disturbing story, and as Swegal explained, the movie is focused on the relationship between Jerry and Joe. It’s hard to watch the trailer and not sympathize with Joe, who is too young to make his own decisions about where he’s going to live, and who is living a scary life because of his father.
Nick Offerman And Jacob Tremblay Co-Starred In Stephen King’s The Life Of Chuck
Sovereignisn’t the first time that Nick Offerman and Jacob Tremblay have co-starred in a movie. The actors are both inThe Life of Chuck, the film adaptation of Stephen King’s short storythat is currently in theaters.Offerman plays The Narrator and Tremblay plays 17-year-old Chuck Krantz.
While fans can never get enough of King’s excellent storytelling,The Life of Chuckhas had low box office numbers. Although audiences have praised the film for its thoughtful and meaningful tale, some critics found the adaptation a little lackluster.Written and directed by Mike Flanagan, the movie follows Chuck at three stages of his life, including his death, nine months before he passes away, and his childhood. The story is different since it starts at the end and concludes when he’s a kid.
