Blending trivia and RPG mechanics was far from an easy task for the Jackbox Games team as they worked to developLegends of TriviaforJackbox Party Pack 11.An idea that had first been pitched forJackbox Party Pack 5, Legends of Triviais the third game revealed forJackbox Party Pack 11,which is scheduled to release in the fall of 2025. The ultimate result is a game that will be enjoyable forDungeons and Dragonsveterans but also approachable for newbies who have never played a TTRPG before.
“We have a lot of people who are very passionate about TTRPGs,” said game director Warren Arnold in an interview with Game Rant, “and it’s tricky because RPGs have people who love them and have very distinct ways they want to play.” Ultimately,Legends of Trivianeeded to be a game that people with little experience with TTRPGs or trivia can enjoy, but also one that is fun and challenging enough for veterans of either or both genres.
Legends Of Trivia Is Designed To Be Playable For All Levels Of Experience
Arnold, whose previousJackbox Party Packcontributions includeTrivia Murder Party, The Poll Mine, Push the Button, and many more, understands thatParty Pack 11will attract both Jackbox lovers who have been playing since the first Party Pack and first-timers who simply want to enjoy a fun party game. He is also excited forDungeons and Dragonslovers to give the fantasy-themed trivia game a try:
“We’re trying to put two genres together, so we want to make sure we service the people who like RPGs and are expecting certain things…But also, there’s going to be people who pick this game up and want to play with their family. Are they getting a good trivia experience as well? Is it a welcoming RPG? I think that’s where the balance is that we’ve really worked hard to hit.”
Gameplay Combines Classic Trivia With Fantasy RPG Elements
Legends of Triviatakes elements ofJackbox’s previous trivia games, such asYou Don’t Know JackandTrivia Murder Party, and recreates them in a collaborative, fantasy-themed setting. Players take on the role of several heroes, including a feline ranger, a spell-casting vampire, and others to defeat a wide range of monsters by correctly answering trivia questions. Each character possesses unique abilities, and players can also obtain items along the way by defeating certain monsters. Arnold would go on to say,
“In games I’ve directed, likePush the ButtonandPoll Mine, the thing I always like to look for is ‘what makes people yell at each other or turn on each other a little bit?'”
Both trivia and tabletop RPGs can create these moments, and it was this synergy that allowed the Jackbox team to fuse the two genres together in creatingLegends of Trivia. The feeling of “your group against the monster” has its roots inDungeons and Dragonsand similar games, but the humorous moments of “watch[ing] people try to get a consensus on things” bring to mind pub trivia nights.
In combining the collaborative nature ofTTRPGswith the inherent competitiveness of trivia, the Jackbox Games team has produced a unique game that blends the best elements of both genres into something new.Dungeons and Dragonsfans, TTRPG newbies, trivia lovers, and those simply looking for a fun party game can all find something to enjoy inLegends of Trivia. The game is an exciting addition to Jackbox Games’ long legacy of trivia titles, one certain to produce hilarious moments at many future game nights onceJackbox Party Pack 11releases later in 2025.
