After the long-awaited submission of Matt Reeves’The Batman Part 2script, DC Studios head andSupermandirector James Gunn recently revealed which DC character would get the script green-lit immediately if they were included in the final draft. The Batman Part 2is the highly anticipated sequel to 2022’sThe Batman, starring Robert Pattinson behind the cowl, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Zoe Kravitz, et al. The darker, detective-driven adaptation focused on Batman targeting the maniacal Riddler, and fans have plenty of ideas about whom the sequel’s antagonist could be, including the Joker and Hush.

Reeves’The Batman Part 2script received wave after wave of disappointing updatesthis year, leaving DC fans concerned over whether the sequel would get made at all. Thankfully, Reeves confirmedPart 2’s script had been completed recently, but since it was submitted while Gunn was on theSupermanpress tour, the boss hadn’t gotten the chance to read it over just yet. However, Gunn recently revealed that if Reeves included one of his favorite DC characters, he’d getPart 2’s script green-lit immediately.

James Gunn Would Instantly Green-Light The Batman Part 2 Script if It Included Bat-Mite

During an interview with ScreenRant at theSupermanpress junket, Gunn returned to his previously shared love for the DC character Bat-Mite, and said, in jest, he would green-lightThe Batman Part 2script immediately if the 5th-dimensional being made an appearance. “I love Bat-Mite…Maybe Matt Reeves put Bat-Mite in the script. If you did, Matt, I’m going to be really, really stoked. Instant green light,” Gunn joked, and mentioned that he wasn’t sure how to bring the character to life, but he felt compelled to do something with him in the future. Previously,Gunn spoke candidly about being irritated by fans’ impatienceduringThe Batman Part 2’s script delays, but it’s reassuring to hear Gunn making jokes about the project after fans panicked in uncertainty.

Everybody knows I love Bat-Mite. Bat-Mite’s like… my man. He’s creepy as hell. I think I’ve got to do something with Bat-Mite someday. I don’t know how to do it – unless Matt’s doing it in his script. I got his script yesterday and haven’t had a chance to read it yet. Maybe Matt Reeves put Bat-Mite in the script. If you did, Matt, I’m going to be really, really stoked. Instant green light.

After Gunn expressed the importance of prioritizing quality over speed when writing a script,The Batmanstar Andy Serkis reassured fansthat the sequel would be delivered amid the unrest, noting Reeves was “one of the most exacting and dedicated storytellers” he had worked with in his career. The director would have a hard time incorporating Bat-Mite into his gritty Gotham, however, since the tone of the character is often lighter than the Fincher-esqueThe Batman, even though he does have his creepy moments. Further down the comic line, DC retconned Bat-Mite to become a hallucination instead of a god-like being, which is an angle that could work in a darker setting.

One divisive change being implemented within the new DC Universe is the existence of two Batman variants, andGunn responded to fans who wanted Pattinson as the main Caped Crusader. SinceThe Batmanexists in the Elseworlds portion of the DC Universe, it means a new actor will serve as the leading Batman within the main continuity, and the new Dark Knight is expected to make a first appearance in Andy Muschietti’s upcomingThe Brave and the Boldadaptation. Jensen Ackles, Alan Ritchson, and Brandon Sklenar’s names have all made the fan-cast shortlist, but an official announcement on the casting is thought to be a while away yet.

The Batman Part 2is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 27, 2025.
