Over the years,Call of Dutyhas been no stranger to controversy, butBlack Ops 6andWarzonehave introduced one of their most divisive crossovers yet. As the industry evolves, and more multiplayer titles have adopted the live-service model,Call of Dutyhas used high-profile crossovers to help generate engagement. This time, though, Beavis and Butt-Head have come to town.
In honor ofBlack Ops 6’s Season 4 Reloaded update,Beavis and Butt-Head have been added to the gamein one of the franchise’s wildest crossovers yet. While some find the collaboration to be hilarious, others are frustrated withCall of Duty’s continuous use of outrageous skins. Between original concepts, like Carver’s Bloke Biter cosmetic, to other surprising crossovers, like theTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,Black Ops 6has continued to lean into over-the-top skins. While it’s understandable for some to be upset that Beavis and Butt-Head have been brought to the battlefield, these types of crossovers are not going to stop.
Call of Duty Has Dabbled With Wild Skins for Longer Than One Might Remember
As in-game stores became more prevalent andCall of Dutyadopted the format, it made the roster of crazy skins feel like a new thing. Granted, there has been a lot, and seeing the likes of Beavis and Butt-Head running around on the map is jarring, but ever sinceBlack Ops 2introduced bacon camo, the floodgates have been wide open for future entries to embrace their wackier sides. The Beavis and Butt-Head skins have received a lot of pushback, but cartoon characters, A-list actors, and original designs will continue to be part of theCall of Dutyecosystem.
The upcomingBlack Ops 7will take place a decade after the events ofBlack Ops 2.
Sometimes, when crazy skins are added to aCall of Dutygame, they can merely feel like cash grabs, butBlack Ops 6’s cel-shaded maps at least add something extra to the equation to bring a fun twist that pairs better with the Beavis and Butt-Head aesthetic. For players who love the wild cosmetics, features like these limited-time cel-shaded maps can offer an extra dose of fun.Call of Dutyhas a tendency to find itself in controversy, but giving the cel-shaded maps their own playlists offers a more balanced approach.
Those who want to experience the cel-shaded maps can find them in the new CODtoons Moshpit and Party Ops playlists, keeping them separate from the main multiplayer. Players who want a more realistic-looking world can simply not choose to play matches in those playlists. There are already leaks suggesting thatAmerican Dadcharacters could be coming toBlack Ops 6, so the cartoon characters may continue to pop up.
While theAmerican Dadleaks should be taken with a grain of salt until officially confirmed, the character skins that were datamined are of Stan Smith and Roger.
Call of Duty Setting Divisive Skins Aside is Unlikely
The fact of the matter is that the crazy skins make a lot of money. WhenconsideringBlack Ops 2and its bacon camo, it means thatCall of Dutyhas embraced goofiness for well over a decade at this point. Nostalgia for the franchise’s more serious tone is understandable, but the franchise has followed the trends.
The Beavis and Butt-Head skins definitely aren’t for everybody, but they at least don’t actually affect gameplay. Players can still enjoy shoot-outs in the same way; there may just be the occasionalMike Judge-created cartoon characterrunning around.
