Summary

Although the corny but fun medical dramaDoctor Odysseyisn’t coming back for a second season, Ryan Murphy is hard at work on plenty of other TV shows. Betweenthe over-the-top procedural9-1-1and the upcoming spinoff9-1-1: Nashville, he’s had a packed schedule. Now thata new season of one of his shows has been announced, I’m curious about what that means forAmerican Horror Storyseason 13. The anthology series has followed a fairly steady release schedule since season 1 premiered in 2011, but season 12 aired from fall 2023 to spring 2024, and fans are still waiting for more eerie episodes.

Murphy recently said that he andAmerican Horror Storystar Sarah Paulson are “cooking up something cool,“andthat brief update made me happy. But I don’t think another season of his true crime show is necessary, and I thinkAHSseason 13 is more intriguing.

I’d Rather See American Horror Story Season 13 Than Monster Season 4, Which Will Focus On Lizzie Borden

Deadlinereported thatRyan Murphy is working onMonsterseason 4, which will focus on the terrifying story of Lizzie Borden, who was charged with the murder of her stepmother and father but acquitted.WhileRyan Murphy has created several successful and interesting shows, from the soapy medical dramaDoctor Odysseyto the beloved horror spinoffAmerican Horror Stories,Monsterisn’t one of his best. Besides the controversy surroundingMonsterseason 1, which is about Jeffrey Dahmer, the series is certified Rotten. The show has an overall rating of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes. Season 1 has 57% and season 2, which focuses on Lyle and Eric Menendez’s story, has 45%.

Whiletrue crime continues to be a popular genre, I don’t thinkMonsteris a necessary anthology series. Instead,I want to seeAmerican Horror Storyseason 13 sooner rather than later, and I think the next season could tell a true crime story. It would be fascinating to watchSarah Paulson, a popular star of the franchise, play a reporter investigating a mystery that people thought could never be solved.

Nicey Nash in Grotesquerie

According toIndieWire,Monsterseason 2 was less popular than season 1, although both had high ratings. But even though people keep tuning in to see what true crime story Murphy has taken on next, I thinkAmerican Horror Storyis a much better series, and it needs to continue. The anthology hasexplored countless tropes from the horror genre and has featured all-star talent such as Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Jessica Lange, Paulson, and Lily Rabe. It’s also fun to see celebrities such asLady Gaga, who played a vampire in season 5,Hotel, pop up from time to time.Monsterisn’t fun and speaks to the problems with the popularity of the true crime genre. It’s not entertaining to watch a fictional version of Dahmer, and since most are familiar with Lizzie Borden’s story, it seems unnecessary to center an entire season of TV around her.

It would be fascinating to seeAmerican Horror Storydive into these criticisms of the true crime genre and focus on a made-up case. I’m much more interested in finding out what scary story Murphy wants to tell next, especially since I’ve been impressed with solidAmerican Horror Storiesepisodes like “Bestie,“which I’m sitll thinking about.

American Horror Story Season 13 Details Remain Scarce, But Ryan Murphy Has A Busy Year Ahead

Besides his recent social media comment that he and Sarah Paulson are working onAmerican Horror Storyseason 13,Ryan Murphy hasn’t shared other details on the upcoming season. There is no release date, and it’s unclear what the main plot will be.

However, fans who have enjoyedMurphy’s recent shows like the genuinely creepyGrotesqueriewill be glad to know he has more projects in the works. In an October 2024 interview withDeadline, the showrunner explained the various TV shows he has in the pipeline. He said:

“I sort of look at my life, I plan it by year, and if I zoom out too far then I get freaked out. I know in the next year of my life, I’m doingAll’s Fair, The Beautyand the JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette love story, which we start shooting in the spring. That’s happening so that takes me to this time next year. I’m like, okay, I’m good.'”

Murphy is exploring a few different genres:All’s Fairis a legal drama,The Beautyis a dark fantasy, andAmerican Love Storyis about JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s romance that ended in tragedy. I’m hopeful that while Murphy is hard at work on these other shows, he’ll still makeAmerican Horror Storyseason 13at some point in the next few years.
