Summary
According to the writer of Wesley Snipes’Bladetrilogy, he had his agent contact Marvel regarding the plagued MCU reboot. David S. Goyer is a prolific writer in the world of comic book media, having co-authored Christopher Nolan’sDark Knighttrilogy and Snipes’Bladefilms. He also createdThe Sandmanseries and the short-lived Matt Ryan starringConstantineseries.
The MCU’sBladereboot was first announced in 2019, with Academy Award-winner Mahershala Ali cast as the titular vampire slayer. Since then, the movie has been in development hell, burning through numerous writers and directors. Talent behind shows likeTrue DetectiveandX-Men ‘97have taken a shot at the script, only for no one to walk away happy. With two directors also stepping away from the reboot, it has even been rumored to be completely dead. Recent rumors have highlighted the possibility that Ali’sBlademay still happen, but nothing is official. However, with all the turmoil, Goyer took it upon himself to attempt to lend his expertise.
As reported byVariety, Goyer was busy with other projects, but with the problems plaguingBlade, those around him made him very aware of the situation. While he was initially uninterested in getting involved,Goyer said, “I had my agent call Marvel and say, ‘Do you guys need any help?'“However, despite his proven success with the character and current comic book properties,Marvel turned him down. As Goyer put it, they said, “‘We love you, but we think we’ve cracked it now, and we’re in a good place.’“The writer was content to stay away but has seen the continued issues, stating, “And then the latest thing happened. And so no, they haven’t contacted me.”
It’s Time For Marvel To Accept Defeat And Give David S. Goyer A Shot AtBlade
Marvel’s willingness to bringBladeback to audiences stems entirely from Goyer and Wesley Snipes, as the character was relatively obscure before he took on a new life thanks to their trilogy. While their continued dedication to the project is admirable, there are clear hurdles they haven’t been able to clear creatively. Bringing in Goyer to help with the script may be the perfect move.
Goyer has proven himself an expert withBlade, keeping the anti-hero’s story and tone throughout the franchise, even directing the third outing. Furthermore, even if Goyer doesn’t write the script, he can still write the story. As withThe Dark Knighttrilogy, he has story credit, with Christopher and Jonathan Nolan getting script credit. Goyer’s involvement would also cause fervor among fans, acting almost like a beacon of hope, which could help Marvel bandage the reputation theBladereboot has taken on.Blade’sMCU future is still in the air, but fans hope to see the character debut at some point.
