Summary
Marvel Studios and DC Studios are typically seen as rivals in both the comic book and movie worlds, with each looking to dominate the superhero space. While DC has some of the biggest characters ever, such as Superman and Batman, the launch of theMarvel Cinematic Universehelped push Marvel into a different stratosphere regarding films.
Since then, many of the biggest stars in Hollywood have played a part in the MCU, whether it’s as a long-running character, a one-movie role, or even a cameo that fans might not be aware of. However, there are still many top actors in the world of Hollywood who haven’t been in a Marvel movie whom fans are keen to see.
One of those is wrestler and actor John Cena, who has been growing his name in Hollywood throughout the past decade due to roles in the likes ofTrainwreck, Bumblebee, andF9. However, entering the world of DC truly propelled him to the next level, taking on the role of Peacemaker inThe Suicide Squad. He proved so popular thatPeacemakerwas then given a television showrun, with Cena’s commitment to the role being a significant reason for it catching on with fans. However, he was asked atFAN EXPO Dallasif he was interested in being in a Marvel movie in the future, which led to the WWE Superstar revealing his unique idea for the two studios.
“Here is my vision; here is my hope for the future. Everybody plays nice in the same sandbox. I would love Iron Man to shake hands with Superman. I would love to see all superheroes across all platforms be involved in a universe. So, if that happens and I get my wish as a member of the DC[U], I would essentially walk into the MCU.
“I don’t write the checks and make the parts, so right now, my answer’s gotta be no, but I hope there is a world where I see all these passionate people come for comics and superheroes,” he said. “I hope we can have different debates because it’ll just give us more stories to tell and more creativity. And I know I’m gonna get punched in the face by critics for saying this, but my long-term vision is we can tell stories with characters from both sides of the fence.”
While there has been no crossover with Marvel and DC characters, Marvel Studios has worked with Sony in recent years, bringing in several characters from Sony’s Spider-Man world to be part of the MCU, with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire evenreprising their roles of Spider-Manalongside Tom Holland. On top of that, there have been many actors who have played characters in DC and MCU movies.The likes of Ryan Reynolds, Idris Elba, and Christian Bale have all been able to do that; therefore, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that Cena could one day appear in a Marvel Studios film. That would likely have to wait until his run asPeacemakerends.
Cena is someone who many people have wanted to see in a Marvel movie for a long time, mainly due to his work in WWE. While he’s currently portraying a villain in the wrestling world,Cena has spent decades being WWE’s ultimate good guy, and the sports entertainment world has a lot of parallels to the superhero genre. The larger-than-life personalities and physical conflict have often led fans to think he’d be a great Marvel hero, with that idea only being intensified once hetook on the role ofPeacemaker.
Cena does feel like a perfect fit as a Marvel hero, not only because he looks like a real-life superhero due to his physique but also because of his ability to blend comedy into everything he does. Cena doesn’t take himself too seriously, and he has proven that in multiple projects such asBlockers. However, evenasPeacemaker, he has blended in lots of humor, which would all fit with the tone of the MCU. Whether fans eventually get to see it will have to wait and see, with Cena’s goal for DC and theMCUbeing rather adventurous.
