Featuring multiple good and bad endings,The Altersoffers a different ending for major decisions that players make throughout their journey. There are six primary endings inThe Alters, but each one of them also has a few different branches.
Getting all the possible endings will require the players to load their save files multiple times and change their decisions. However, it’s not all about the decisions made in the final act of the game, as some mid-game decisions may also change the outcome in the end.
Spoiler Warning: Due to the nature of this list, prepare for major story spoilers.
How to Prepare for All Endings
To get all the endings, you will need onesave file from Act 2before choosing betweenTabula Rasa or Neural Implants. Another save file will be required at the end of Act 3.
The decision on Act 2 will branch the ending into two different paths:Maxwell’s endingsandLena’s or Agatha’s endings. Thedecisionsat the end of Act 3 will determine the branches for each one of those major paths.
In the final part of Act 3, after activating the beacon, the player will receive a series of tasks to complete, preparing for a confrontation with the rescue team. Building thefake Rapidium Arkis a must for all endings, but the others are optional. However, it’s best to prepare everything requested in each one of those tasks, so that you may load your final save with all the options available to play through different endings.
Maxwell’s Endings
In order to continue the mission with Maxwell and get his ending, players must choose tocure the alters with the brain tissue from Tabula Rasaat the end of Act 2. This choice will have the following consequences before the branching endings:
Evil Maxwell Ending Without Stealing the Rescue Ship
To get the evil or selfish ending with Maxwell, players must choose “Do Nothing” when Jan is at the bay of the rescue ship. With this choice, Jan avoids stealing the ship and lets the rescue team lead the ship where Maxwell desires.
With this ending, the fate of some of the alters remains unknown. Those who part ways with Jan at the end of Act 2 remain on the alien planet, but those who are smuggled within the fake Rapidium Ark areassumed to be imprisoned by Maxwell for his wild experiments. This can be vaguely understood, based on the final conversation between Jan and Peter, an employee of Maxwell.
However, Jan does receive an encrypted message when he leaves his apartment. The message could be either from the rebel group that remained on the alien planet or one of the alters who may have escaped from Maxwell.
In this ending, Jan himself turns into an employee of Maxwell, but he gets a new identity asMaxwell fakes his death. Jan is transferred to Maxwell’s lab with a private plane and will likely become an asset for Maxwell’s experiments.
On the other hand, Lucas Pena leaves Maxwell’s department and goes back to his hometown, helping with the kids. He refuses to answer any messages from Jan.
Regarding the humanity side of things, Maxwell founds his very own corporation after getting the Rapidium Ark from Jan, but the situation with food doesn’t resolve.
There is no mention of Lena in this ending, as she has entirely cut her ties with Jan after theend of Act 2.
Good Maxwell Ending With Stealing the Rescue Ship
If Jan decides to steal the rescue ship, things will play out differently in the end. Depending on how the player manages to steal the ship, there will be slight differences.
In general, stealing the rescue ship will prevent Maxwell from getting any Rapidium Ark and will actuallyput him on trial. Now, if the player gets help from Lucas to steal the ship, he will help with distributing the Rapidium Ark to start-up companies, significantly helping with resolving the food crisis. Otherwise, the Rapidium Ark will end up in the hands of Ally Corp, and they won’t help with the food problems on Earth.
Moreover, if Lucas helps with stealing the ship, he will reveal some horrendous facts about Maxwell in the court, blaming him for the corruption of the rescue mission. This puts Jan in a much better position with a chance of getting acquitted from the trial.
However, not using theRAT deviceand crafting an autopilot by yourself will not help with Jan’s trial, as he will be the main suspect for sabotaging the rescue team’s mission. This might push Jan to spend some time in jail.
Now, choosing between blowing up the base to kill the rescue team members or using sleep gas will also only affect Jan’s trial. The former will add more heavy charges to the case, and Jan will face some years in prison, while the latter will make the case lighter.
Speaking of the alters, those who are smuggled through the fakeRapidium Arkwill manage to flee. Jan will receive an encrypted message, which is assumed to be from the escaped alters. He has also already received some postcards from those alters who are apparentlyliving a peaceful life.
While Lena still avoids talking to Jan, she does agree to come to his trial and testify in his favor.
Lena & Agatha’s Endings
To unlock this path, players must choose tocure the alters using the neural implantsat the end of Act 2. Some of the outcomes of this decision before the endings are as follows:
Evil Agatha Ending Without Stealing the Rescue Ship
When approaching the rescue ship, if you choose “Do Nothing,” this will trigger an evil ending, where Jan will face no trouble, but hisalters' fates will remain unknown. Remember, since none of the alters remain on the alien planet in Lena/Agatha’s path, they can all be smuggled onto Earth.
With this ending, all the Rapidium Ark ends up in the hands of Ally Corp, and so do the alters. The corporation cares about nothing but its share price on the market, which is why the food crisis still remains as it was.
Lenacompletely ditches Jan with this ending, though she gets a promotion and becomes thehead of the Rapidium Department in Ally Corp. Jan turns into a hero in the eyes of the media, attending multiple ceremonies one after another, though he never learns about the fate of his alters.
Jan does receive an encrypted message when leaving his home, but it is unknown who this comes from. It could be from the alters, who may have escaped Ally Corp.
Good Agatha Ending With Stealing the Rescue Ship
Either planting thesleep gasin the ship or destroying the base will change the outcome of the ending in favor of the alters. Stealing the rescue ship guarantees a free life for all the alters, thoughJan gets into deep trouble.
Killing the rescue team members and not getting help from Lucas is theworst-case scenario for Jan. This way, he will be charged with counts of murder aside from stealing the ship and sabotaging Ally Corp’s mission. This could send Jan to prison for five years or more.
That being said, the alters will live freely, sending postcards and encrypted messages to Jan. In this ending, Lena will testify in favor of Jan with some emotional phrases, but it remains unknown whether the two will be back together or not.
Speaking of the Rapidium, it all ends up in the hands of Ally Corp, and, as expected, they don’t help with the food crisis. However, they urge Jan to tell their version of the story in court and avoid revealing the existence of his alters.
Now, if Jan uses sleep gas instead of explosives, this will remove murder charges from his case, making it a bit lighter with a sentence that encompasses one year to five years in prison at most.
A muchbetter outcome is reached when Jan uses sleep gas and also gets help from Lucas to hack the rescue ship. This way, Lucas takes full responsibility for stealing the rescue ship, and Jan may only face 12 to 18 months of home confinement.
Botanist’s Endings
Aside from the endings mentioned above, there is a third path that is defined within Agatha’s Path. To get Botanist’s ending, you will have toside with Lena and use Neural Implants to cure the altersat the end of Act 2.
This decision will prevent Botanist from leaving the base. So, he will be available when smuggling alters to Earth, and he will ask a favor from the real Jan.
This favor triggers before the final goodbye in the final days of Act 3 after activating the rescue beacon. The Botanist will call for a talk with Jan, and then he will ask Jan toswap places with him, so that he can replace the real Jan and live the rest of his life with Lena.
It doesn’t matter what the player responds to Botanist at this moment, as he will ask for this again when the alters are saying goodbye to Jan. If you choose to accept the deal and swap places with the Botanist, Jan will enter the fake Rapidium Ark and theBotanist will become the playable character going forward.
Keep in mind that playing as Botanist will completely remove every lesson that Jan has learned from his alters, though it doesn’t really affect the endings.Playing as Botanist will also have two different endings.
Evil Botanist Ending Without Stealing the Rescue Ship
When playing as Botanist, if you choose “Do Nothing,” it will put Botanist in a better position, though the fate of Jan and his other alters is never revealed. The Botanist pretends as Jan to everyone, buthe does tell the truth to Lenaabout how they swapped places.
However, Botanist still has the chance to either lie about smuggling other alters or tell the truth about handing them over to the Ally Corp. In any case, Lena will still keep talking to Botanist, but it doesn’t seem like they will be back together again. With Lena taking over the Rapidium Department, though, it seems like theBotanist and Lena are working together to solve the food crisis.
The fate of Lucas or Maxwell is unknown in this ending. But, Botanist receives an encrypted message from someone named “J” in the final sequence. This could be a message from the real Jan or the other alters.
Good Botanist Ending With Stealing the Rescue Ship
If the Botanist stays loyal to Jan and the other alters, he will face a trial, but he will also be able to live with Lena again. Actually, this is the only ending where Lena and Jan (Botanist, to be more accurate) are back together.
Similar to the evil ending, Botanist pretends to be Jan but tells the truth to Lena. While Lena is fired from Ally Corp, she comes to pick up the Botanist and takes him to court. When talking to Lena, the Botanist does say to Lena that he loves her, and Lena seems to be quite positive as well, though she asks for some time so that she can grapple with the revelation about the Botanist swapping places with the real Jan.
Thefood crisis doesn’t get resolved in this ending, as all Rapidium Ark ends up in the hands of Ally Corp, and without Lena overseeing it, nothing good happens for the people on Earth.
Now, the options between having to use sleep gas or explosive charges will have the same impact as they have with Good Agatha Ending. The same goes for getting help with Lucas. Sleep gas and Lucas’s RAT device will bring the best outcome to Botanist, and he can go back to live with Lena after one year or 18 months of home arrest.
In this case, the alters and the real Jan also live freely. They contact the Botanist by sending postcards, and he also receives an encrypted email, which could be from the real Jan.
