It’s All in the Layers

Afterbeating Peekabruiserbefore him, Grumpy Kong’s boss fight requires you to make use of your Bananza mode. Grumpy Kong’s huge statue will start off with a dirt-based layer, and a large dirt club it’ll swing at you whenever you get close. The first thing to do is focus on taking out its club to render it pretty much defenseless.

Grumpy Kong will still jump and slam down, attempting to crush you beneath the huge machine he’s piloting. While this still counts as an attack, it’s far easier to read and get out of the way of before he slams down. Make sure to use your roll (ZL) to quickly evade incoming attacks.

Press and hold L+R to enter Bananza mode, and wait for Grumpy Kong to slam his club down. As soon as he does, destroy it with a few hits. With this out of the way, you’re able to focus on destroying the bottom dirt layer. In Bananza mode, this won’t require too many hits either.

With this done, you’ll be moving onto the second layer of the big machine. Instead of using charge punches, just use your standard attacks in Bananza mode and you can quickly work your way through this layer. While each charge punch will destroy more of the layer, they also take a while to charge up, opening you up to a slam attack from Grumpy Kong. Plus, in this supercharged mode, your punches will still make light work of it.

If you’re having trouble beating Grumpy Kong or any boss inDonkey Kong Bananza, you can alwayschange the difficulty settingto make things easier.

Down to his final layer, Grumpy Kong himself will now appear at the top. Jump or climb your way up and begin punching him. You can see how much health he has left by the purple bar that will appear next to his name. The main thing to look out for here is Grumpy Kong’s club attack. He will only do this when you climb to the top to swat you away, but Pauline will helpfully shout “Look out!” whenever he’s about to do it, so as soon as you hear this, jump down. As soon as he’s finished swinging the club, jump back up and continue to punch your way to victory.
