Beyond the hype moments ofUmamusume: Pretty Derby’sraces lies the Scouting system, where players can get new characters and cards to raise. It’s no secret that this is a gacha game, but for players who have come from titles likeHonkai: Star Rail,Umamusume’sgacha system may seem confusing at first glance.
This guide covers the basics of how the gacha system works inUmamusume, so before you go spending all of your Carats, make sure to take a gander at these important pieces of information first.
Umamusume: Pretty Derby - Scouting Mechanics
In simple terms, the Scouting menu iswhereUmamusume’sgacha takes place. Here, you’ll find all the available gacha banners where you can spend your Carats on. Banners include:
The Spotlight banners have set expiration dates listed on their title cards. Once they expire, they’ll be replaced by a new limited gacha banner. Meanwhile, the standard banners do not expire, but they do not have any of the limited SSR characters that appear on Spotlight banners.
There are alsoone-time banners that guarantee SSR characters and Support Cards. However, these require Paid Carats.
Paid vs Free Carats
Carats areUmamusume’smain gacha currency, and players can have either Free or Paid Carats. Every Carat you earn through in-game means (i.e. missions, events, Team Races, etc) are considered Free Carats, while Paid Carats come strictly from real-money purchases.
Pure F2P players can ignore the Paid Carat classification altogether, though they do incentivize people to make small, one-time expenses on the game if they so choose. You won’t need to pay for Carats if you want to getall theUmamusumecharacters, but these will help you get them more easily.
Is There a Pity System?
Yes, but it’s not as simple as in other gacha games. ThePity system inUmamusume: Pretty Derbyuses anExchange Point system. Every time you roll in any of the gacha banners, you gain 1 Exchange Point. You canuse your Exchange Points to outright purchase who or whatever is in the featured banner.
There are some caveats to this:
One 10-pull costs 1,500 Carats, so if you want to guarantee an SSR Uma or Support Card, you’ll want to save up 30,000 Carats and use them all before your chosen banner expires.
