Former Rockstar Games employee andGrand Theft Autodeveloper Obbe Vermeij believes fans may preferGrand Theft Auto 6at 30 FPS, as this would allow the studio to render “twice as many polygons” compared to if the title targets 60 FPS. While Rockstar Games, the developer and publisher ofGrand Theft Auto 6, has yet to confirm whether or not the game will support 60 FPS on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S at launch, the possibility of it being limited to 30 FPS has been met with resistance from fans.
Unfortunately,Grand Theft Auto 6won’t be available for PC at launch. This isn’t out of the ordinary for Rockstar, as the studio has been known to launch its titles on PC months or even years after their console releases. This means anybody who wants to experience the nextGrand Theft Autogame on day one will need to purchase either a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Series X/S. According to an industry insider, the best platform to playGrand Theft Auto 6on is going to be the PS5 Pro, as Rockstar is reportedly working with PlayStation engineers to optimize the title for Sony’s flagship console. The leaker claims thatGrand Theft Auto 6"continues to hit 60 FPS" on the Pro console.
Undoubtedly, the best way to experienceGrand Theft Auto 6is going to be on a PC, as high-end rigs will have the capability to run the game at 60 FPS and higher. But that, unfortunately, means waiting even longer than the current July 06, 2025, release date. However, former Rockstar Games developer Obbe Vermeij doesn’t seem to think playingGrand Theft Auto 6at 30 FPS would necessarily be a bad thing, and even says that fans “might prefer the visual details” that are possible when only targeting 30 FPS. In response to a fan on Twitter, the game developer called it a “trade off,” noting that 30 FPS would allow Rockstar to render twice as many polygons compared to 60 FPS.
Former Rockstar Dev Thinks 30 FPS May Be Better for GTA 6
Ever sinceGrand Theft Auto 6’s first trailer was released, fans have been debating whether or not the sheer scale of the game will prevent it from running at 60 FPS. While some believe the studio should prioritize frame rate over graphics, it’s clear from the most recent trailer that Rockstar would need to pull off something incredibly impressive to getGrand Theft Auto 6to run at 60 FPSon base consoles. As it has been twelve years since the release ofGrand Theft Auto 5, there’s no doubt that Rockstar intends to make the next installment in the series bigger and better in every way, which means 60 FPS is going to be hard to pull off.
Vermeij isn’t the only former Rockstar Games developer to weigh in on the 60 FPS conversation. Back in January, Mike York, a former animator at Rockstar, expressedhis doubts aboutGrand Theft Auto 6hitting 60 FPS. The game developer said he doesn’t think Rockstar will be able to “pull off” 60 FPS and will likely be “shooting for 30 FPS” instead. York went on to explain that the open-world title is likely going to be locked at 30 FPS in order to prevent the game’s performance from fluctuating.
