Sucker Punch Productions’ directors, Nate Fox and Jason Connell, have recently talked about the inescapable comparisons between the upcomingGhost of Yoteiand the recentAssassin’s Creed Shadows.Ghost of Yoteiwill be released on October 2, and withAC Shadows’ launch earlier this year, it’s essentially impossible not to compare both games set in the final days of Feudal Japan.
Released by Sucker Punch in 2020,Ghost of Tsushimawas a big hit, selling over 13 million units since then. The success led tothe announcement ofGhost of Yoteiduring the PlayStation State of Play in September 2024. The upcoming sequel will be set 300 years afterGhost of Tsushima, and it will feature a new protagonist called Atsu.
Now,Ghost of Yotei’s co-creative directors, Nate Fox and Jason Connell, were interviewed byGame Informer, talking about details of the upcoming open-world game. During the interview, they were asked what they thought ofAssassin’s Creed Shadows, and if they were afraid of comparisons. Connell responded that creators can either “kind of freeze up” or get excited that the medium is being expanded upon when they see similar games being released. So, they are not afraid of the comparisons, as they believe that Ubisoft “makes awesome games,” and that “it’s just fun to see so many other cool games in this space.”
Ghost of Yotei’s Directors Are Not Afraid of Comparisons to Assassin’s Creed Shadows
I think it’s just fun to see so many other cool games in this space.
Comparisons betweenGhost of YoteiandAssassin’s Creed Shadowsdo feel inevitable, anyway, as the games have a fairly similar setting and are both high-profile AAA games.Assassin’s Creed Shadowswas a big hit, performing very well financially for Ubisoft, and achieving an average critic score of 81 onOpenCritic, just a bit belowGhost of Tsushima’s score of 84in 2020. WhileGhost of Yoteiwill be set on the island of Hokkaido in Northern Japan in 1603,AC Shadowsis set in the central region of the country in 1579.
It remains to be seen how well-receivedGhost of Yoteiwill be. Last year, thedevs promised to makeGhost of Yotei’s open-world design less repetitive, as the previous game in the series was heavily criticized for lacking more “unique experiences” during exploration.
Gamers who are interested in the upcomingGhost of Yoteihave the chance to purchase a limited-time PS5 bundle.TheGhost of YoteiPS5 bundlecomes with two options, one for the PS5 Pro and another for the PS5 Slim, but supplies are limited, so fans should be quick.
