Monday, July 7 is either going to be a huge day for fans ofFinal Fantasy 9, or a bitter disappointment.Final Fantasy 9was first released in 2000 for the original PlayStation. In many ways a return to the franchise’s roots after the heavy science-fiction influences inFF7andFF8,Final Fantasy 9released to widespread critical acclaim and is generally considered one of the best games in Square Enix’s long-running franchise.
Final Fantasy 9was trapped on the original PlayStationfor a decade before being made available to download on PS3. It was then ported to Android, iOS, and PC in 2016 before the HD remaster made its way to PS4 in 2017 and Switch and Xbox in 2019. These efforts have madeFinal Fantasy 9playable on most modern gaming platforms, which is fantastic for those that want to revisit the classic. However, there are some fans hungry for a full-blown remake of the classic game.
AFinal Fantasy 9remake has been rumored for years. The project was part of theinfamous Nvidia leak, with many other titles in said leak proving to be real. Reliable leakers and insiders have also thrown their weight behind theFinal Fantasy 9remake rumors, making it seem like a matter of when, not if, the project will be announced. As it so happens, this coming Monday, July 7 marks the 25th anniversary ofFinal Fantasy 9’s release on the original PlayStation. Needless to say, the game’s anniversary seems like the most opportune time to announce said remake, if it does exist. On the flip side, if Monday comes and goes with no mention of theFF9remake, it may dash hopes that the project is real. It could really go either way at this point, and so fans should brace themselves for either possibility come July 7.
Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary Date
Square Enix has been releasingnew art ofFinal Fantasy 9’s characterson the website it made for the game’s 25th anniversary. Now, it’s entirely possible that this new art and various other small acknowledgments will be the extent of Square Enix’s plans to celebrateFinal Fantasy 9’s 25th anniversary, but that would be an odd move, all things considered. It may also lead to fans feeling misled if theFinal Fantasy 9remake isn’t announced on July 7.
If theFinal Fantasy 9remakeis real and is announced soon, it will be interesting to see what direction it takes. It’s possible it could be something on the scale of theFinal Fantasy 7remake with a completely revamped battle system, but it could also simply be a redo ofFF9with graphics to match modern standards. Whatever the case may be, here’s hoping the rumors are true and fans get their long-awaited answers on theFinal Fantasy 9remake sooner rather than later.
