Initially developed by a single person,Phasmophobialaunched during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and quickly became a go-to for popular streamers, helping the indie title promptly rise to the top of sales charts in 2020 as a viral hit. The title snagged the award for Best Debut Game at The Game Awards 2020, and years after its PC release,Phasmophobiawas released on consolesin October 2024. The horror game has now sold over 22 million copies, and development isn’t quite finished, with the title’s creator shining some light on what players can expect when Phasmophobia finally launches into Version 1.0 next year.
Speaking toEurogamer,Phasmophobiacreator Daniel Knight teased the major Horror 2.0 update, stating that the 2026 patch will be so consequential that it will feel like users are playing an entirely new game. While Knight doesn’t give too much away, he states that the team will be “reworking the entire horror in the game,” and that “everything is going to be changing.” Curiously, the developer won’t be dropping many patch notes for Horror 2.0, instead asking players to simply give the overhauled game a try once the update is live. One of the biggest changes will be made to the horror title’s audio, though how it will be altered remains a mystery. Patches continue to roll out for the indie game, withPhasmophobia’s July 2025 updateadding new recordable video evidence and a slew of helpful fixes.
