While HBO’s next installment in the Naughty Dog adaptation won’t focus on Ellie and will focus on Abby’s side of the coin, fans who will miss seeing Bella Ramsey’s complex character will be able to get their fix in their new upcoming series that promises to be “atmospheric” and “darkly comic”.
Ramsey, who played Ellie in HBO’sThe Last of Us, will be taking a back seat as the spotlight will shine on Abby, just like in the game. However, season 3 will be quite different in many ways now that Neil Druckmann won’t be a part of the show. In a recent statement,Druckmann revealed that he would be stepping away from the adaptationand putting his focus into the studio’s upcoming game,Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet,as well as other video game projects. The news hasn’t gone down too well with fans about the future of the series with Mazin now behind the steering wheel, especially afteran already divisive season 2.
Forget The Last of Us, Bella Ramsey Has a New “Scarily Dark” TV Show on the Way
According toDeadline, Bella Ramsey will star as another complex character in Daisy Haggard’s Channel 4 TV thriller/dramaMaya.Ramsey will take on the role of Maya, the teenage daughter of Haggard’s Anna, as the pair strengthen their mother-daughter bond after fleeing London to a small town in Scotland due to a traumatic past event, leaving them both under witness protection. However, even in a remote and peaceful setting, the mother and daughter realize that they still aren’t safe as they are tracked by a pair of hitmen set on taking them out.
Filming forMayais scheduled to commence later this year in Scotland, with further casting announced in the coming months. “This story and these characters Daisy has created are so alive, nuanced, wickedly funny and scarily dark,” expressed Ramsey to Deadline. “Every character jumps off the page, the dialogue is incredibly witty, and I’m so excited to get to play Maya opposite Daisy’s Anna.”
“I wrote the part with Bella so clearly in my head and I honestly still can’t believe they want to be part of it," said Haggard. “Bella is pure magic, just insanely talented, and I can’t wait for us to work together. I’m also thrilled to be taking the leap into directing, and excited to have the opportunity to co-direct the series alongside the brilliant Jamie Donoughue.”
Of course, with Ramsey running off into the hills of Scotland this year, it may give a good indication whenThe Last of Usseason 3will start shooting. Since Ramsey will possibly come into the show in flashback scenes, it’s apparent that its next installment won’t be underway any time soon, especially with Neil Druckmann leaving the show, and no ‘meaningful work’ has so far been done on season three other than a plot outline.
